When it comes to fish drawings, there are many directions that you can take to achieve your desired sketch. Drawing fish can be either a difficult or a simple task depending on what you desire the end result to look like. But all in all, as with most challenges in drawing, practice is the key.

How to draw a cartoon character of yourself

Let us take cartoon fish for example. Cartoon fish are a delight to draw. The rule of thumb when it comes to cartoon drawing is to make use of simple shapes to create a more complex shape. This rule is particularly easy to apply when it comes to drawing cartoon fish as drawing a single circle and adding a few other lines to it will often suffice.

If you wish to draw a fishy cartoon, let us start simple. First, draw a rough circle. It does not have to be perfect. The next step is to add a tail fin and other important details such as a mouth and eyes. You can opt to make the fish appear more human by giving the eyes and the mouth a human element.

This makes the fish more appealing to an audience. Have some fun while drawing and illustrate the fish's mouth in such a way that makes it look like it is smiling. Release your creativity by drawing more fish and varying them when it comes to body shape, color, fin size and facial characteristics! Do not be afraid to have fun.

The difficulty people tend to have when it comes to fish drawings mostly has to do with the type of fish that they are trying to illustrate or depict. For instance, drawing a tropical fish is very different from drawing a shark or a Koi.

In order to draw a more realistic looking fish, you can start with this simple exercise.

Start by drawing two curved lines that intersect nearing the end. Create the tail by connecting the two curved lines at their tips. Then draw a half circle. This will serve as the gill opening. The next step is to give the fish fins. Feel free to play around with the shape and size as you see fit. You can repeat this exercise over and over making variations each time. This is a great way to exercise your fish drawing skills!

Do not forget to give the fish a mouth and an eye.

Now we begin shading the body of the fish. Tilt your pencil slightly and shade the body lightly and slowly. A good tip to keep in mind would be to make sure that the lower section of the fish’s body or the belly is of a lighter colour than the top. You can also pencil in more strokes on the fins to make them appear more fin-like.

Make sure that the strokes on each of the fins face the same direction. The scales can also be marked by making criss-cross marks across the upper part of the fish's body.

Remember, keep practicing and have fun drawing your fish. Soon you will be creating fish drawings that are so realistic you might just find them jumping at you!
