The Setup

Joe was a regular at a local dive bar called The Beer Stain, where everyone knew him. They knew him so well they didn’t seem to mind that he repeated the same ole stories about his glory days playing high school football—he’d been a great player until he blew out his knee. No one in the bar dared to tell him how insignificant those times were, given his current status as a drunken bully with a few felonies and some jail time.

Except for Mr. Mackie, the old man who owned and tended the bar. He was ole buddies with Joe’s dad and had known Joe since his diaper-wearing years.

One day Sheri walked into The Beer Stain, and sunlight cut through the dense smoke until the door slowly closed behind her. Four guys occupied the place, including the bartender. A couple was playing pool in the back, Joe sat at the bar and Mr. Mackie, the bartender, was…well…behind the bar.

Sheri scanned the room and locked eyes with Joe.

Being Joe, he yelled, “Hey there pretty lady, I got a seat for you right here.” Joe made a V out of his index and middle finger while whirling his tongue between them.

Just the guy I was looking for, she thought.

To Joe’s surprise, she walked in his direction.

Sheri plopped herself onto the barstool next to Joe and placed her purse on the bar. “Can I buy you a drink? I’ve had a bad day and don’t want to drink alone.”

“Who… me?” he asked, before thinking how stupid the response was. He’d always played the badass role with guys but women, especially ones as beautiful as her, intimidated him.

“No, dumbass, she was talking to me!” Mr. Mackie blurted. He had that Cheshire Cat grin on his face as he wiped down the bar.

“Don’t give me shit, old man,” Joe shouted.

“Yes, you silly. You are the only one at the bar if you haven’t noticed.” There was a short pause. “Well… except for the handsome young man behind the bar.” She gave Mr. Mackie a wink.

“Yeah… of course. I knew you were talking to me. Of course, I’ll have another, if you’re buying.”

“Two of what he’s drinking,” she ordered.

“Coming up, pretty lady.” Mr. Mackie made it sound like a pickup line. He filled frosted mugs from the tap and placed each in front of its respective owner.

“Now mind your own business, old man.” Joe spat.

“Do you need anything else, darling?” Mr. Mackie still spoke in his suave lady-killer voice.

“No, I’m fine for now.”

“Well, if you do, give me a holla. Everyone calls me Mr. Mackie, but you can call me Mack.”

“Mack it is, then.”

He finished by staring at Joe. “I need to go into the back and tally up some of the tabs a few of my regulars haven’t paid yet. You know, if you give them an inch they’ll take a mile.” Mr. Mackie walked off, leaving Joe and Sheri by themselves.

“So. What’s your name?” she asked.

“I’m Joe.”

“Joe, I’m Sheri.” She held her beer up. “Cheers.”

“Cheers.” They clinked their glasses together.

“So you want to get out of here?”

Joe hadn’t finished swallowing his beer and almost choked at the question. He cleared his throat. “YES!” it came out with the excitement of a teenager. He immediately repeated. “Yes. I agree. We should get out of this place.” Sounding more mature and masculine. “You’re still paying for this round…right?”

Wow! How are you not married? Sheri pulled two five-dollar bills out of her purse and slid the money onto the bar. She took another gulp of beer, hopped off the barstool, then gave the command. “Let’s go!”

Joe got up from his barstool to follow behind Sheri, grabbing one of the five-dollar bills as he did so.

They ended up at his place, not far from The Beer Stain. They walked up to the door, and before Joe could put the key in the lock, she lurched out at him, grabbed his arm and pulled him around to face her. Joe was amazed at her strength, given her size compared to his.

“Do you have any pets?” she asked with eager anticipation.

“Umm, no. Why?”

“Oh, nothing.” She shrugged. “I have allergies.”

Sheri had expected Joe to still be living with his parents, but he had a place of his own. She walked inside, all the while scanning the home. It was small and in dire need of a woman’s touch. Clothes and beer cans lay scattered throughout the place. Leftover food sat around in the kitchen and on an end table next to the couch. And she swore she’d seen something scurry out of that pizza box on the floor next to the garbage can in the world’s tiniest kitchen. Sheri pushed it all out of her mind. “I need a drink, Joe. Whatever you have will do.” She tossed her purse on the floor.
Joe went to the fridge and pulled out two of his best-canned beers—Pabst Blue Ribbon. He pulled the tabs to open them, then stretched his arm out to hand one to her.

Sheri reached out, walking toward him, and took the beer, but she continued walking toward Joe until her body pressed against his. Without even taking a sip of the beer she put it on the counter. Her hands made their sensual decent to his waist. She was taking charge of the situation and he was fine with that. He relaxed, letting her do as she pleased. The woman fondled his belt, loosening the buckle. She reached down into his pants and grabbed hold of him, but unlike a lawnmower, Joe’s motor had started before she pulled the string.

Joe was amazed. They did things he’d only seen in porn movies.

She waited till the next fuck session before telling him about her marital problems. Sheri made up different scenarios about how Frank would be violent towards her. After she and Joe had sex, she continued to rant. “He hits me,” she sniffed. “I’m scared to be around him, Joe!”

“You need me to get some of my boys to scare him?”

“No. You can’t tell or involve anyone else in this. I mean it, Joe, or you’ll never see me again!” She paused. “Sorry, but I have to go. I’ll see you next week, okay?” She got out of bed and frantically put on her clothes while gathering her things.
“Yeah…okay, baby.” He jumped out of bed and grabbed her arm before she could get away. He gently pulled her to him. “I can’t stand to see you hurting like this. If I need to kick the shit out of Frank myself, I will. If he’s not going to treat you right, you need to leave that motherfucker. You could be my girl.”

They had exchanged a kiss before Sheri pulled away, telling him she had to go, and they’d talked about it next week. She knew at that moment she had him. He was soft and pliable as clay. She knew he’d do whatever she wanted.

The following week, the day before Sheri and Frank’s thirteenth anniversary, they were back at Joe’s place in his bed. She didn’t need to have sex with him one more time, but she liked it. Joe could work magic with that slimy appendage between his jaws like Merlin could work a wand. When they were finished screwing and settling into each other, Sheri laid out her final plan to Joe. He had his arm around her slowly stroking her back through the covers with his fingers as her head lay on his chest.

“I have an idea, Joe,” Sheri said. “For this to work I need you to break into our house. I’ll leave the back door open, so you don’t have to break in and risk waking Frank up. He leaves his gun out on the nightstand next to him, so once you’re in the house, come to the bedroom, grab the gun, tie him up, then you and I will have sex while he watches. You need to do this and not mess it up, baby. Someone will have to die tomorrow. You need to be prepared because you’re the right person for the job. Frank has a million-dollar life insurance policy that we’ll collect when it’s all done. We can do whatever we want with the money, just you and me. Can you do this?”

“Of course, babe. I got this. You should have mentioned the money first.”

“Make sure to wear gloves and bring some of those tie wraps to subdue him. We’ll use his gun and make it all look like a robbery.”
