AFRICAN CULTURE PROMOTED OR ERODED
Nigeria has a country is blessed with over 200 diverse kinds of languages as a means of communication but we have given the British English the opportunity to overthrow our respectable languages.
Many youths as at today cannot speak in their indigenous languages fluently and even when they do they will include phrases like as in, you know, but, to mention a few. And when youths are even guilty of this I wonder what will happen when they start giving birth to children, definitely the children coming up wont even understand our indigenous language it at all. Many homes see it today as a taboo to speak in their indigenous language, they only speak in English. Even the officials are not helping matters they tend to see British English as superior to ours. When you get to their office and greet them in your language, the next thing you will hear them say is
cant you speak in English
.
Another thing is our mode of dressing. As at now we are so occupied with making ourselves photocopies of foreigners rather than promoting our cultural way of dressing. We have abandoned our way of dressing iro and buba for the ladies
and sokoto andbuba for the men
. We have beautiful native dresses like Ankara, kampala, Adire that can be used to make beautiful dresses for both men and women. Rather jeans, pencil skirt and trousers and suits are the order of the day. Even atimes we don’t get comfortable wearing this but just for us not to be seen as old school we have to inconvenient ourselves and put it on. The annoying part of this dressing is that females now have to go half naked by exposing some delicate and sensitive parts of their body just to look fashionable and beautiful.
Another point is that of our moral. Nigerian youths of today has no morals at all. They talk anyhow to their parents and the elderly ones as if they are talking to their junior ones, no respect whatsoever. The aspect of greeting also is faulty, it is a known fact that the ladies\women are expected to kneel down and the males\men are to prostrate whenever they are greeting an elderly person, but in the Nigeria of today there is no such thing again. Ladies now find it hard to kneel down and guys find it hard to prostrate, all they do is bend and go their way. Which is very wrong.
In addition, our culture has now been abused to the extent of men making use of earrings and making their hair, which is also wrong but they see nothing wrong in doing this just because the foreigners are doing it and so they followed suit.
Lastly, sexual immorality. This act is now seen as a normal thing between a lady and a man that are yet to be joined togerther. And they take any measure just to prevent pregnancy.
In conclusion it is high time we turned a new leaf and desist from all these acts. Let`s promote our culture and not let it die!
