One of my best friend is a Psychiatrist... One of my mentors is a Professor of Psychiatry... One of my good friend is a Consultant psychiatrist.

One of the most difficult things to do is to convince an apparently normal Nigerian to see the psychiatrist... Many of them will promise you they will see the Psychiatrist.. But when you call them for follow up.. You will know they never visited.
Years ago in a ward round... A woman was lying peacefully in the bed... Calmly... Her husband had just bundled her to the psychiatrist... Few days ago.. He offended her and before we finished spelling offence... She had lined all his clothes and shoes and set them ablaze.. Her husband suddenly didn't have shoes or clothes.

Her children were the next in line... They were disturbing her and making so much noise at home... And suddenly she brought out a machete and was threatening them... The smart husband did the needful.. And that was how she visited a Psychiatrist and she was admitted.
Right there on the bed for some minutes she was justifying her actions... They wronged me she shouted... In a split second she became remorseful... She was treated.. And has not been brought back.. Husband, wife and family happy.

Another man was brought to the psychiatric hospital... He was nicknamed a Political party ( name withheld, so the post is not derailed)... He enters a bar.. Forget it... Drink as you like.. He will foot the bills.... He enters a boutique and he meets you... It could just be your lucky day.. He will pay for you... He enters into a party and splashing of money is involved.. Fear not.. You will swim in Naira... He was clean, well dressed.. Nothing apparently was wrong with him.. But his family was hurting... They knew something was wrong.. They summoned courage and took him to a Psychiatrist.
Right there before the psychiatrist he was shouting and complaining to the psychiatrist.. 'my people are very greedy, is it a crime to help other people and bring them out of poverty, after all I have helped them too'.. The Psychiatrist told him Calmly' don't mind them.. It is good to help people'... To which he responded ' I like you doctor, you are the 1st person that has been on my side'. In 3 weeks time he was thanking the Psychiatrist.. Thank you Sir.. Na so my money for just finish just like that.

Many Nigerians are so oblivious of Mental health issues... With the level of Crime, ritual killings, kidnapping and so on... It's obvious a lot of people walking around.. Should be clients of psychiatrists.
The other day some one was mocking someone that committed suicide blaming his death on a politician...Suicide or attempted suicide is actually a mental health issue.
Just recently a woman, a practising lawyer was alleged to have murdered her husband in cold blood... And it was said that it was not the 1st time she has stabbed him....saw a picture of her online at the scene of the incidence.. Standing with hands akimbo.. And almost without a trace of remorse... No be every person wey wear cloth dey normal. And with alcohol and Ibo freely available...

No be everything be spiritual problem or witchcraft.... If in doubt.. See a Psychiatrist. #mentalhealth #donttrivializedeviance
