SteemSTEM Distilled #37

in #steemstem7 years ago (edited)

Welcome to the 37th issue of SteemSTEM Distilled, a bi-weekly curation effort by the members of the @steemstem team.

SteemSTEM is a community driven project which seeks to promote well-written and informative Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics posts on Steemit. The project involves curating STEM-related posts through upvoting, resteeming, offering constructive feedback, supporting scientific contests, and other related activities.

For more details, a recent update on the steemSTEM can be found here, and a not so recent one there. Moreover, if you ask yourself about what it means to be part of steemSTEM, please check here.

Our team scours the platform for original and quality content.

After working through thousands (literally!) of STEM-related posts and upvoting more than 150 that we deemed to be worthy, we proudly present you our top 6 handpicked choices for this Monday-Wednesday period.

Monday

Animal Series #13; The Apex Predator Of The Sea

In this post of his "Animal Series" @chloroform talks about the mighty hunter of the seas, the shark. Don't miss it.

Seeing Inside of the Things With Muon Scanning Tomography

A post for the physics lovers of the community that talks about muon tomography. Do you want to learn more about it? Then read what @gokhan83kurt has written for you.

Tuesday

The Side Effects of having 'Clean' Water

Harmful pollutants in our water call for water treating processes before consumption. However, can "clean" water have side effects? Watch another excellent video by @exercisinghealth. The "verdict" might shock you.

How Coyotes Are Killing The Red Wolves

The population of the endemic species of the red wolf has been on the decrease and the culprit is... the coyote. Read this post from @sustainablyyours to learn more about it.

Wednesday

Aging in Reverse – Immortal Jellyfish

Turritopsis Dohrnii is a jellyfish that has the ability to live for ever. How? @katerinaramm explains it very well in her post.

Geology and Civilization Part 2: Not a Drop to Drink

The second part of @mountainwashere's series "Geology and Civilization" talks about a precious element... water. Are we in danger of running out of it soon? Read on and find out.

A few words about the nomination process

For the sake of transparency we feel we need to clarify how our nomination process works; each issue is compiled by certain members of the SteemSTEM community. This mid-week's editorial team was comprised of @ruth-girl.

The editorial team chooses their favorite posts for the week and each issue is the result of their joined effort. In order to keep the process fair, posts written by the editorial team are excluded from the nomination process.

Don't be discouraged if you didn't make it on this issue. The competition is harsh and there is always a next time :)

See you all next Monday!

Sort:

Let's start by congratulations all people contributing to STEM on Steem. We all know this is a tough moment in terms of Steem price...

Now some news:

  • SteemSTEM-supported authors that have been found not that engaging to the community will see their support reduced from today. For more information, please contact our honor members.
  • We will not support anymore users using bid bots.

[upvoted for visibility]

Good choice on not supporting bid bots.
About the Steem price, I can't wait but see my account value grow when Steem grows!
And I will keep my promise of doubling any rewards received by buying an equal or greater value in Steem with my own funds.

That is a very good move of you :)

Love this decision. Fuck bots.

I agree! All of them ;)

Are non-bid bot permanent upvotes like @steembasicincome or @qurator still fine?

They are fine. Everything is actually fine.

Just to be clear: we may just decide to reduce (or even suppress) the steemstem support to those using any bot connected to a vote buying service. It is then up to the authors to decide what to do.

I've largely avoided vote buying bots since last fall, but I'm a huge fan of lifetime upvote services- I feel like they encourage more commitment to the steemit platform, and they tend to be better about weeding out bad actors than bid bots.

Also, one thing I haven't said, proportions matter :)

This is an awesome development.

Using bots is a right we cannot ask people to give up on.
We just state that we are not going to support tactics we do not agree with.

Exactly. At the end of the day, people do what they want, and we do what we want. We just wanted to make the point clear to everyone :)

Yes!! I agree. There should be contribution from both the side so as to grow and develop. 😇

This is a great decision! Voting bots have gotten so out of hand here on Steemit, so I'm all in for any good strategy to lower their overall use.

We totally agree! :)

Agreed. Frankly, in my opinion, we should never have had voting bots on this site really. Their only real positive use is the "heaven of the long spoons" approach where you use them to help others.

The SBDs they collect should definitely be used otherwise... :(

Now I know who I offended

I use bot that is why have not been curated... Tho I use it so my post Will be visible to many not for........
I am going to change... Am sorry

You didn't offend anyone. We just decided that people who prefer to buy votes do not need us. Nothing more nothing less.

Not going to do it again

Hope am good?

great, this news seems excellent

Υou have done an amazing work once again, authors! Congratulations!

Thank you for making this opportunity possible!

And thank you for giving us such great pieces of your work! :)

Thanks to you as well for you know why ;)

For being beautiful of course :P

What else? (I am not G. Clooney)

Congrats to everyone! It looks like a lot of water-associated posts in this issue.

I was thirsty when compiling the posts :P

Should we send you some water?

Linked to the very humid weather of those days :D

The steemstem project is a fair project encouraging authors with good contents.

Yes it is, but not only. We are actually aiming at creating a living community down here ^^

Thank you @steemstem for the support.

On Tuesday, I read a post written by @mobbs. I really enjoyed it, and feel it is also worthy to be on this list, for that day too.

Here is the article: Chinese Pseudoscience, the many colourful ways Chinese medicine might kill you

Unfortunately, no post from the team can be featured, but thanks for advertising this post!

Again! This is another great job by @ruth-girl.
And also, congratulations to all the authors that received support from steemSTEM. Like I've always said; It's a privilege, not a birth right.

There is indeed not any thing like a birth right :D

That's why it's a privilege sir :D

Very well done, @ruth-girl. Your effort is appreciated.
Curation is also hard, so everyone involved should get a big thank you! Good times lie ahead, let's only think where each of us was one year ago.
Cheers to everyone!

Curation is hard, but now is somehow lighter (more shit posts, less good posts)... Let;'s hope to see this trend reverse soon or later...

Don't start me, I have a 4-day vacation due to Orthodox Easter that my country is following =)

Please write! :)

Congrats to all authors who made the list, it's @ruth-girl at it once more and she just gets better at this, don't you agree.

The community just gets better and we moving forward to being the best on the blockchain , nice one @lemouth, picturing you on white hairs and beards now, the wisdom is so impressive :)

Several beards? Wow! I am however just a normal guy ^^

@sathyasankar : When distilled comes out, I use to search for my name by ctrl+F. It is a great feeling. :) Congrats everyone. #steemSTEM is simply awesome.

One can also browse the 6-8 posts manually. This keeps more suspense... ;)

I do go through posts. Today I got busy with the replies from my python post. And I got excited to get all steemit userids etc. I agree that my activity is less regarding going through posts. it will be getting little bit lesser in coming days. Because I have to write my draft for a paper. But I am contributing in other ways too. I will have to allot specific time for going through posts. I will do! I assure. 😃

It was ironic, don't worry :)

Thank you much again, I'll try my best to engage (especially in the German sub-branch) in the community. ;)

Thanks to you for doing this! :)

Not sure if I'm doing it right - so let's see when the complaints start to rise. ;)

:P

Complaints are always the not-funny part :)
