  • INTRODUCTION:

The liver is the largest meaty internal organ in the body that sits at the right hand side of the belly. It weighs about 3 pounds, it is reddish-brown in color. It is made up of two lobes with variable shapes.
The product of digestion desolves in the blood through the hepatic vain to the liver, while the hepatic arteries carries blood from the heart to the liver.
The liver's main job is to filter the blood coming from the digestive tract, before passing it to the rest of the body. The liver also detoxifies chemicals and metabolizes drugs. The liver also helps in making protein important for blood cutting and other functions in the body.
So now after I’ve explained what the liver is, let see what are it’s functions in the body.

  • FUNCTIONS OF THE LIVER:

However, the liver has so many functions in body. Below here are the functions:

  • Carbohydrate Metabolism:

Excess glucose are being stored in the liver as glycogen. When the blood glucose level is low, the liver reconverts glycogen back to glucose through the action of the glucagon.

  • Deamination:

This is the process of breaking down excess amino acids into ammonia and keto-acid when they are less harmful to the body. The excess amino acids are converted into urea which are excreted by the kidney or skin while that of keto-acid are converted to glycogen and fat for further use.

  • Storage Of Vitamins:

Fat soluble vitamins like vitamin A, D, E and K. And water soluble vitamins like vitamin C are stored into the liver. As such, this vitamins are released into the blood stream when needed.

  • Production Of Heat:

The activities of the liver generate heat which helps in maintaining the body temperature.

  • Storage Of Iron:

The liver stores iron which is being obtained from the breakdown of red blood corpuscles.

So after I might have explained the functions of the liver, now let’s check-out the diseases of the liver...
