Jose Mourinho, Alexis Sanchez and the Glory of Manchester United

Alexis Sanchez finally joined Manchester United after being linked to cross city rivals Manchester City for most of last summer and even this winter. Rumors of the move came up out of nowhere and suddenly picked up pace. Alexis is not the first big Arsenal player to move directly to United. The most famous is Robin van Persie who joined United in 2012 for a 24 million pound fee and won them the Premier League title in his first season where he was also voted the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year.
The 2012-13 season, the last season of legendary coach Sir Alex Ferguson is the last season United was crowned Champions of England. Since then they’ve had 3 managers, won the FA Cup, the Carabao Cup, the Community Shield and the Europa League. But they’ve not been at their best in the main competitions they used to excel, the Premier League and the Champions League. They made the top 4 under Louis van Gaal finishing 4th in the 2014/15 season after finishing 7th the year before under David Moyes. Unfortunately they finished 3rd in their group and dropped to the Europa League where they were eventually knocked out by Liverpool. In the 2015/16 season they missed out on the Champions League finishing 5th in the Premier League. In the 2016/17 season they finished 6th in the League but qualified for the Champions League by winning the Europa League.
The 2016/17 season was the first season of Jose Mourinho. Mourinho is the former Chelsea coach, a 2 time Champions League winner and multiple time League Champion. Jose won 3 trophies in his first season at United; the Community Shield, the Carabao Cup and the Europa League. He is currently in his 2nd season and is in 2nd place, 12 points behind Manchester City after 24 games. He is also through to the RO16 of the UEFA Champions League where Sevilla await.
Mourinho has improved United. This is their best start to the League in a long time. The only reason why he’s not being recognized is because Manchester City is having an even better season, a phenomenal season in fact. It’s safe to say the League is gone but they have as much of a chance as anyone else in the Champions League.
The United Squad is looking very balanced and promising now with Pogba and Martial putting in great displays. Lukaku seems to have recovered from his mini slump and Jesse Lingard is enjoying a purple patch. The defenders Bailly and Jones are recovering from injury and De Gea is as good as ever. The team is really shaping up as a force to reckon with once again. They’ve scored 49 goals in the Premier League and 12 in the Champions league so far.
With the acquisition of Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal, United is bound to be even better. Alexis was Arsenal’s top scorer and top assister last season and he’s a dogged player with insane pressing skills and enough will and magic to win games on his own. An attack consisting of Sanchez, Lukaku, Pogba and Martial with Lingard and Rashford supporting is bound to strike fear in the heart of any defense.
It’s true that this is not the first time United has had great players line-up for them even in the Post-Fergie era. They’ve had Zlatan, Di Maria, Falcao and even Mkhitaryan in their employ so we can’t really be certain of success (and by success I mean League and CL in this case) but that doesn’t mean we can’t hope. With the League looking Etihad bound, United can focus on the Champions League where they have a relatively easy tie against Spanish side Sevilla. They have the luxury of being able to call on their new forward line. Alexis their new signing is not cup-tied as luck would have it. He’s played in Europe this season but in the Europa League so he will be available for selection. And with Mourinho, one of the few men to have won the Champions League more than once, there’s nothing stopping United from going all the way. He has won the competition with worse teams.
Even if they don’t win the CL, they still have a solid base for the future. Most of their stars are young and they are even rumored to be after some of the most promising players in the game. With Mourinho in charge and money to spend, the sky is the limit for this United team.
Thank you for following @steemsports and you can find me @timoshey
Hate him or love him,Mourinho always delivers that is why he is rightly considered by many as one of the best coaches of all time. Only time will tell if Sanchez is a good signing .
A lot of people try to take credit away from Mourinho by saying he spends a lot of money on transfers but this is not his fault , the market is just crazy right now. All top coaches need quality players who can only be gotten through huge transfer fees.
