Daily Coin # 152 A Lovely 5 Francs From 1960's France
In 1960 the world was poised on the edge of a technology explosion , here comes the future ! On January 1 1960 the Bank of France issues a new franc , equivalent to 100 old francs . Also on January 1st Johnny Cash plays his first free concert for inmates , at a show at San Quentin Prison in California . (Future country star Merle Haggard is in the audience , serving time for burglary.) Our coin today was one of 55,082,000 minted in Paris France in 1960 . It is minted of .835 % silver , weighs 12 grams , and is 29 mm in diameter .
The obverse of this coin features once again"La Semeuse" wearing a phrygian cap , facing left surrounded by the words
REPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE .
The reverse of today's coin shows us a revised version of the previous few reverses we have seen in this series . In this version there is three intermingled sprigs - wheat , oak , and an olive sprig .With the denomination (5 francs) flanked by a cornucopia at left and owl at right , above , and the year (1960) below .
The edge of this coin is smooth with raised letters that say "LIBERTE-EGALITE-FRATERNITE"(Liberty Equality Fraternity)

I just love the Sower. You know what, I think that I will start adding old circulated world coins (Canada, etc) to add to and diversify my US Constitutional silver.
That is a good idea. Although not all are 90% silver, it diversifies the junk silver collection and many are very beautiful, like the Canadian silver half dollar.
To many it is not junk at all Ronaldo !!! ;-)
As you know ss I would encourage any coin collecting !!! Its a great way to preserve some history !!!
