Focus On - 1935 Crown - UK

I thought for my first post here I would do a "focus on" article on a coin from my collection. Depending on how well this goes I may do more.

So here we have the 1935 crown from the UK. For those unfamiliar with UK pre decimal coinage a crown was worth 5 shillings, or 2 half crowns, or one quarter of a pound.

The coin features King George V and is known as the Rocking Horse Crown due to the art deco style St George, horse and dragon designed by Percy Metcalf. This design seems to split opinion but I love it and it makes a difference from the Pistrucci George and dragon seen on other crowns and sovereigns. (Pictured on the right).

Do you want some stats and figures? Of course you do
Mintage -715,000*
Metal - 0.500 silver
Weight - 28.28g
Diameter - 38.6mm

  • As far as I can find there were approximately 14,300 specimen coins minted, 2,500 proofs with raised lettering on the edge in 0.925 silver and 25 in gold. There are also error coins which have incorrect lettering on the edge. Unfortunately my examples are bog standard ones.

nice coin you have there, long live the silver bulls .... it's a waiting game untill the hunt brothers come back!

Very interesting. My Mum used to have a shilling and it fascinated me as I'd only ever known decimal coins. Followed.

I have some old shillings going back to the 1820s. I may do a post about them another time.

Nice Post - Nice Coins @carlossilver - I Love UK silver coins - I've seen these 1935 crowns before - I tend to go for pre-1900s Crowns - this post has peaked my interest I didn't realise it had such a low mintage - and it is a Nice coin(unique).
Thank You

Thanks for the comment @blackrussian
I've got a stash of Victorian crowns. They are one of my favourites.

Hell yeah I need more of these!
