Glenmorangie 18 year old Extremely Rare

Country: Scotland

Region: Highland

ABV: 43.0%

Age: 18 years old

Style: single malt whisky

Price: AUD$140~ (I bought mine from FirstChoice liquor. Best price usually comes from TheWhiskyExchange or MasterOfMalt. The AUD has been dipping so it's arguable)

Glenmorangie is one of the more popular proprietors of single malt whisky in the world. They produce a fair amount of liquid gold per year and most are quite nice despite mass production. Located in the highlands rather than Speyside, the whiskies tend to be slightly more peated. Few certain bottles seem to disappear from production and get replaced with NAS (no age statements) whiskies. Story for another day..

The 18 year old comes in a standard box package - a rare thing for Glenmorangie mind you... most
Bottles come in cartons with the exception of your premium products. The bottle is standard Glenmorangie - blown glass style, slightly wider than the products on the lower end of the spectrum. Still a beautiful bottle though. One of those 'less is more' situations..

Nose: sweet and sour citrus juices, creamy honey, spicy (but not overly woody)
Palate: medium spice, light peat, very creamy with a 'sting' of citrus
Finish: spices more woody, fruity, citrus aftertaste

You can smell the age on the initial nose. The aromas are richer, the fruitiness and creaminess with each waft.

Taste is a tapestry of citrus fruits with spiciness. Quite tantalizing.The first sip was a bit heavy on the palate, kind of took my breath away. After a few minutes it settled quite nicely.

Tried it with some water and also with one ice cube.

The water did the trick of stopping that initial hit on the palate and it doesn't take away from the whisky. One or 2 drops ought to do it.

The ice kind of drowned the dram. Once it cooled it, it was delicious; probably bearable for a whisky drinker of any experience. Once the ice melted. Egh. Let's just say, you better finish it quick.

As usual, I don't like to give number ratings for things. I believe it unconsciously gives us a school-like approach to something that should be enjoyed and savoured.

My final thought is that this whisky is

GREAT!

The taste is quite defined; citrus fruits with slight spiciness. A quality single malt that won't break the bank; I still wouldn't recommend it to the newbie whisky taster though..
