The Word of God Unleashed: A New Booklet For The Saints

A lot of new people to our circle ask for a book covering what theonomy is, or if there is an introductory level book. The response is usually throwing them a couple of books coming in at about 300+ pages, and they are honestly very academic. This reoccurring situation put a rock in my shoe, and finally, I decided to take it out and deal with it. The result was a booklet on Psalm 146. Here are a few other reasons I wrote the book:

• To show that God and His Law is gracious.
• To encourage Christians to start serving their community through practical applications of God's Word.
• Because God's command to disciple the nations is closely related to you serving your community according to His standard.
• Because God's people are turning over their responsibilities to the government or "trusting princes," and this should be stopped immediately.

A lot of people who get into apologetics (defending the Christian faith) have read the quote regarding the defense of the Bible by C.H. Spurgeon,

Pardon me if I offer a quiet suggestion. Open the door and let the lion out; he will take care of himself. Why, they are gone! He no sooner goes forth in his strength than his assailants flee. The way to meet infidelity is to spread the Bible. The answer to every objection against the Bible is the Bible.

Or maybe this quote,

These mighty men are intent upon defending a lion. O fools, and slow of heart! Open that door! Let the lord of the forest come forth free. Who will dare to encounter him? What does he want with your guardian care? Let the pure gospel go forth in all its lion-like majesty, and it will soon clear its own way and ease itself of its adversaries.

Many apologists have followed this advice of Charles Spurgeon by practicing presuppositional apologetics. Apologetics is not the point here. I contend that they have let the lion (the Word of God) out in their theories, maybe in their church walls as well. But, they have not let the Bible go forth into the world and shape their actions in and towards their community.

In the words of Martin Selbrede in the forward of this booklet,

I highly recommend this short volume and look forward eagerly to subsequent expositions in this series. It is high time we unleash the whole counsel of God among His people, setting aside the prevailing shallow understandings of God's Word that so cripple His people, making their salt so tasteless. Booklets like this constitute an important step in the right direction.

Psalmodic Ethics

The Law of God (Genesis-Deuteronomy) undergirds all of the Bible including the New Testament. The book of Proverbs is filled with wisdom on how to apply the Law on a daily basis. The case laws in Exodus-Deuteronomy are explanations and applications of the Ten Commandments regarding education, family, caring for the poor, civil government and penalties, hygiene, etc. The Bible of the Apostles and most of the Christians early in the New Covenant was the Old Testament. The Old Testament was what the Bereans poured over (Acts 17:11), and it was what Timothy was to teach the saints in his city to apply (II Timothy 3:16-17).

The Psalms are the Law in action. Hope against raging enemies, praising God for victories, and teaching us about the character and actions of a sovereign God. Not only are the Psalms inspiring and descriptive, but they also contain marching orders, albeit in poetic language.
