He Asked Me What I Thought About Romance

Romance is when everything around two people seems to be crashing down on them, yet the weight of the world is nothing compared to what they both feel. Their love echoes magnitudes of warmth, and when they are together, it’s as though all of their worries, doubts and fears were made just to lead them to each other’s arms.

But romance can be a distraction. It can be a distraction from the truths that this world doesn’t shy away from hiding, that love found in movies is bullshit when slammed against the realities of life.

Romance is when broken souls finally see their beauty through the eyes of the other. Not in a ego-feeding kind of way, but in a way where the parts of themselves which they once hated are now the parts that bring a smile to their true love. And slowly, together, they pick up their pieces and help make each other feel whole again.

But romance can make people feel reliant. Their self-worth rests upon the words of admiration that their significant other whispers in their ear at night. Now it’s as though without them, their worth is nonexistent, as well.

Romance is when seeminly perfect people find imperfections they’ve never noticed before. Not until they met, they touched. Suddenly those imperfections scream in bright red lights, and the only way to silence them is by fixing themselves, not for selfish reasons, but the exact opposite. It’s selfless. It’s when two people want to become better versions of themselves for each other.

But romance can break people even further. What seemed like a fairy tale at first is now a story of someone who wants to control you, even force you to change into his or her ideal partner. And if you fail, you’ll drown in your own guilty and self-pity.

Romance is when two hearts, regardless of distance, manage to beat as one when they embrace for the first time. And it’s like their bodies were moulded to hold each other perfectly. No space in between. All curves and edges locking together, as though all these years, they were just waiting for their other half.

But romance can drive people crazy to the point of having to end it all. It was beautiful when it started, but keeping the flame alive made it weak instead.

Romance is when every little detail in a day reminds you of him or her. Suddenly, random things like rain on the pavement or pizza crusts have meanings you wouldn’t trade for anything.

But romance can make people too concerned with love. They’ve forgotten about other important things that matter. They’ve sensationalized the idea of being together.

Romance is. Romance can.

Romance starts as something innocent and alluring, but can quickly turn into something vile and destructive. But among all the possibilities, there is one truth that I know.

Romance is a messy, beautiful thing. And in this messy, beautiful world, it makes the most sense.
