Steemmonsters: Can you combine gold and normal cards?

I got a Goblin Merch as a level 4 gold card in a day quest.
Somehow I thought that there are always only cards with level 1 ... but of course I do not want to complain.
So now my question: Can I combine this card with normal cards or is it only possible to combine gold with gold and normal with normal?

      Gold foils can only combine with gold, normal with normal. One of the benefits of gold foils is the come at a higher level. Common gold is level 4, rare gold is level 3, ect.
