3 Great Blockchain Games - Decentralized Apps

in #steemmonsters6 years ago (edited)

I've been exploring around and trying out different dapp (decentralized app) games and wanted to share with you a few that I think are fun and worth looking into. These are in no particular order. All of them are very cool.

Splinterlands TCG

This is the first one that I really started to get into before I found the other ones mentioned below. It's what I would consider a top notch dapp game. Originally known as Steem Monsters, this game is built on the Steem blockchain. That is the same blockchain that is hosting this article you are reading. Currently they are adding some integration with the Tron blockchain and because of this have decided to rebrand as Splinterlands.

It is a digital Trading Card Game (TCG) along the lines of Hearthstone, Pokémon Online, etc... but there are some unique aspects to the game that were facilitated by being on the blockchain. The biggest difference is that each of the cards is a digital asset along the lines of CryptoKitties. If you aren't familiar with the concept, each card in the game is owned by you. It can't be taken away by the game designers. You can buy, sell, trade or even borrow or lease a card between other players and collectors. Below is an example of what the cards look like:

While this game isn't free-to-play (f2p) the starter kit which comes with 30 cards is only $10 and can be paid in crypto, paypal or credit card. Once you have your starter kit there are several ways to get plenty of additional cards without spending any more money. The game's matchmaking algorithm for battles ensures that you will have a good experience regardless of the current level of your card collection. There are also daily tournaments where you can win cryptocurrency and other prizes. It's really fun and the community is great!

Chibi Fighters

This is a game built on the Ethereum blockchain that I've been playing for the past couple weeks and am really enjoying it. I usually use the MetaMask browser extension to connect my Ethereum wallet to the dapp. This game is also based on collectible digital assets with gaming elements built in. When you sign up for free you get a starter character called a Chibi Fighter. You can just play with this character and never spend any money in the game. There are ways to earn cryptocurrency but some of these ways are limited if you only have a free Chibi Fighter. You can purchase fighters from the open market for as little as 0.025 Ether (approx $4 USD) and you can spawn new ones through a process they call Fusion.

There are several modes of play, including passively sending your charters on adventures and autobattle modes as well as active modes such as butcher and slasher. It even supports the use of an X-box game controller! This game includes both player versus environment and player versus player. In addition to the characters being collectible assets which you can trade/buy/sell, the items are also available to trade. The weapons are bonafide digital assets on the blockchain at the same level as the characters. The other items such as armor and consumables can be traded in-game.

These are my two Chibi Fighters on the Ethereum blockchain. Yushin is my free character and I've gotten him up to level 10. Red Robin is the character that I bought. It's actually a Founder character which were available to people who got theirs early. I managed to buy an unopened founder Token from a player on the discord server for this game. My character turned out to be Common level but otherwise it got amazing starting stats and a top notch weapon. I could have sold it immediately for more than I paid, but I want to use it to actually play the game. I've built her up to level 8 so far through playing the game.

Tron Blockchain: Today (May 4th, 2019) Chibi Fighters also launches on the Tron blockchain! It's my understanding that some of the items will be capable of trading between the two platforms but I don't know exactly how all of this is going to work. Either way, Tron seems to be a popular blockchain for dapps. Instead of (or in addition to) using MetaMask to connect to your Ethereum wallet you will be using something like TronLink to connect your Tron wallet. These wallets are where you store your characters and weapons for the two blockchains.

I didn't manage to get a Founder character for the Tron blockchain before they all sold out but I did get the next best thing which is an Early Bird character. It comes with a pet! This item may end up being a novelty but there has been some talk of making it a digital asset on the blockchain that can buff your Chibi Fighter character and might even be capable of gaining it's own experience points and leveling up. I should be receiving my character and early bird starter pack any second now and I am excited to find out what traits my character will have! I will make a follow up post tomorrow sharing my experience with the new Tron blockchain branch of the game. Check back here to see my latest posts: https://steemit.com/@jeremycrow

Mythereum TCG

This is another Trading Card Game but this one is on the Ethereum blockchain, so you'll want to use something like MetaMask to hold your assets and sign in to your account. As you might expect the cards themselves are the digital assets. This game is still in early stages but it is much more than just a digital trading card game. It is a full on role playing game (RPG) with game elements such as resource management, tower defense, tournaments, alliances, player versus NPC and leveling up your cards.

The lore behind this game is quite deep! There are full novels being written that take place in the world of Mythereum. You can download some of their books in PDF format from their website. The creators of this game have a clear passion for what they're doing and it shows.

The cards themselves are used in some unique ways, such as setting up a deck to defend your stronghold which plays on automatic if you get attacked. You can spend hours deck building for different purposes if that's something you're into or you can create one strong deck and then swap cards out along the way for fun. You actually get three starter decks of 10 Survivor cards for free when you create an account, which is also free. The image above show some of the Survivor cards in my collection. I should note that I just saw an announcement regarding an upgrade to the card style and it's looking great!

This game is legitimately free to play (f2p) but of course you can spend some money to buy packs of cards. There are also ways to buy extra cards with the in-game currency MX that you earn in several ways playing the game. This MX is also used to upgrade cards in your collection.

CryptoKitties into MythiCats - One really fun thing they did with this game was to allow you to take your CryptoKitty digital collectible and "forge" it into a MythiCat card. These can be some of the more powerful cards in the game and they don't cost very much to obtain. Part of the inspiration behind this was that the developers wanted to give people who owned some of these digital assets to have some way of using them in a new way. They will likely do more projects like this in the future with other digital assets.
