When I saw this challenge for the writealong by @steemitmamas, my mind went literally blank. I tried to search through my memories of some toys that I probably had played with and I even asked my husband what he played with. His were gameboy and Nintendo.

But what was mine?

As I could recall, I had very few toys at home. My parents didn't really buy toys for us back then. I remember I had a teddy bear and another toy racing car (which I pretended that it was my dog and tied a leash to it). What we regularly did was opened two cabinet doors, put a cloth over them and pretend play in there.

As I grew up a little more, I played more board games but they were never mine. They could be my cousins' or neighbour's that we played together. There were their building toys like Lassi and Lego. I am not sure if the aeroplane chess or Ludo is considered as a toy. That was when I entered primary school. There were also UNO cards in secondary school. I also played a bit of Mastermind, which belongs to my cousins. That was quite a fun analytical game that I liked back then. I love to have my cousins over so we could play physical games like hide-and-seek, What Time Is It and Pepsi Cola. I was thinking to consider these as the toys I had but they were more like games to me.

Then suddenly I remembered of a red baby piano.

I got that piano from my grandparents when I was 4 I think. I couldn't remember the occasion of getting it. It was a vintage simple red piano, not even sure if it was in tune. My grandpa was one who really would want to show his love for us and he used to buy us candies or those toys in surprise boxes like Dora and Jojo. He did all of this secretly because he knew my mom didn't like us to have too many toys. Being raised by my grandparents, it was one privilege.

When he got us the piano (back then I was to share everything with my sister who is 13 months old younger than me), we were delighted. It looked just like the piano in the cover photo above. We didn't know how to play music at all, so we just played noise. My grandpa would still smile and looked at us intentionally. He would say we were noisy but he would still look at us. Of course with the excitement we had over the baby piano, it could not be hidden from my mom. Surprisingly, she was okay with it.

It was with us a long while till our brother came along 8 years later and we were taking out the older toys to let him play. He smashed it with his foot! But he was just a baby back then.

Thank you @steemitmamas for making me recall of this fond memory I have of my grandpa actually. Even as I am finishing this up, I felt my nose having the sensation of wanting to tear up. (Do you know what I'm talking about?)

Do join us in our writealong! Thank you for reading about my favorite childhood toy!

Awwww what a cute post! I think that was sweet that you and your sister shared toys. I had a Kermit the frog keyboard that I adored and learned to play by ear. I never had a piano of this sort, I can imagine how fun it was to play.

I’m sorry but I have to admit I chuckled when you said your brother came along 8 years later and smashed it with his foot. I wasn’t expecting that ending. Watching how rough my boys are with their toys I can imagine the joy that came from him smashing it. It seems destruction is just wired in males! 😄

Thanks for sharing~

Hahahahahaha! So funny that it made you laughed :P yeah he's the only boy in the family so I guess he had to do it :P

Haaa! Of course he did!! 😅

I don't really owned any toys at all when small, living in a kampung area doesn't really required that I guess...

We have a Toy Piano too!

My sister got it when she was a little itty bitty baby. I have memories of laying in my room playing it with my feet. Then it ended up at my grandma's house. The kid there used to tie it with a rope and drag it around the house.

It disappeared for a while.

But them my daughter was born and one of my uncles restored it. He worked the wood and polished it, he added new legs and made it all nice and shiny.

12 years after restoration it is sitting next to my computer and gets banged on often. It's missing two keys since last month.

I almost shook my head and grumbled that they "can't keep anything nice" then I remembered my feed, dragging it with a rope, and sitting my oldest on top of it for pictures.

That piano sure has come a long way. And my mom still remembers when my dad came home with it.

Yay!! When I wrote mine, I was worried it was going to sound sad though I don't think it was sad at all.
I didn't have any toys either. But a whole lotta play time in nature, climbing trees, make believe and what I wouldn't give for my kids to know that life.

Looks like LittleDrummerBoy got his flare for music from Mummy too :)

Hahaha I'm going to check out yours! Yeah I played more on real bulldozers and tadpoles in the pond, hopping around in my grandparents' vegetable garden.

Nah, he didn't get it from me at all! Lol I'm the non-musically inclined among my husband and I :P
