Being a light - Inspiration
The other day I had a group of girls and we were discussing how to be a light in the world that seems so dark sometimes. Well how do you explain this to a grade 4 learner. I told them a story.
There were a lighthouse at the end of the beach. When you look at it during the day it seemed out of place and just this tall white building with no proper function. Each and every day this building were standing there and it thought to it self: "I don't mean anything to anyone, what is my purpose to be here, I just see people go up and down"
"I wish I could do something different than just stand here", the lighthouse thought to itself. The one afternoon the lighthouse thought to itself that this would be the last day that he will be standing here and if nothing happens that knight he will go off and seek something another place he could fit in.
Little did the lighthouse now what was about to happen that knight, there was a big storm on its way. There has never been a storm like that before. The lighthouse felt the excitement and yet also nerves because what was he suppose to do. Suddenly their were aloud noise. The lighthouse started to show his light all around him in the ocean and spotted a big bout a few meters from him. He fixed his light on the boat till the boat came the shore. The storm started calming down and the sun started to make its appearance.
The following day the lighthouse overheard the captain of the boat telling someone on the shore that if it wasn't for the lighthouse he would have lost his boat that night.
I shaired this with the girls that we all have a purpose and the main purpose in our lives is to share the light in us with others, the love that is in our hearts is suppose to be shared with people around us.
The one girl asked me what are you suppose to do when some kids are nasty with you.... I explained to them that we were all born with hope, love and care for others but a lot of things happen in our lives but we need to choose what we do with it. With the light in us we can change things around us....even if its just one person, one friend or just one small thing.
Light makes the dark parts, the scary parts in life not so scary anymore....you realize that its not so hard to face anymore.
I could see that the girls were excited just to realize that they could mean something to someone. We are never alone. It is so amazing to see our children getting knew hope and seeing them want to help their friends. Light attracts people and that is the hope we can give a grade 4 girl, to be a light in a world that seems to be dark.
Thank you for reading my story.
I read somewhere that to one teacher saying "They don't pay me to like the kids", another teacher would reply: "Kids don't learn from people they don't like."
-edit-
I looked it up, and it's from Rita Pierson, as seen in this list of inspiring Ted Talks.
Just something I had to think about when I read this.
