This is a really encouraging story as this has happened for real. I assume that a lot of your students must have been old but very low in proficiency level compared to their classes.

Your job must have been doubly difficult having to deal with the violence as well as non-proficiency of the students. Can you share some techniques about how you made your students learn and work on their language skills particularly?
