Sophy and Jason visit the Sphinx - Story with questions - Reading for Gr 3-4

in #steemiteducation7 years ago (edited)

Sophy and Jason's dad woke them up early in the morning, with a big surprise.  He had to go on a business trip to Egypt and they were going with.

They were so excited.  They have traveled with their father before, but they have never been to Egypt.

Sophy likes to know more about a country they will visit before they go there.  She switched her computer on and quickly searched for more information on Egypt.

She found a very interesting video and after she watched it she could not wait to see the pyramids and the Sphinx for herself.

The kids packed their clothes and soon they were up in the air on their way on the plane to Egypt.

When they got to Egypt their father first took them to the hotel they would be staying in and they were a little bit disappointed that they could not visit the pyramids right away.  Their father had an appointment and they could only go the next day.

While their dad was gone they decided to visit the market close by.  There were lots of stalls selling beautiful materials, interesting art and food.  They explored the whole day and that evening they slept like logs , all the walking and excitement made them really tired.

The next morning they were up very early and waited for their taxi to come that would take them to the pyramids.

It was breathtaking..... even better than on the video and pictures the saw.  They also learned a lot.

The Sphinx looks like a lion lying there, but is has the head of a human.  There are many legends and stories told about the sphinx and how brave and strong he was.

Some people believe that there is a secret way into the statue of the Sphinx, but nobody has ever found it.

It is a very big statue and the is about 150 feet long with huge paws at the front and the head of the statue is 30 feet long and 14 feet high.

Sophy felt very small while looking at the statue.

You can read more interesting facts on the Sphinx here.

There were a lot of people working on the statue and the guide told them that these people are restoring the Sphinx so that it could look the way it did a long time ago.  Unfortunately the sand and wind caused a lot of erosion and most of the nose was gone and they would fix it so that the whole statue would look as good as new.

If was a wonderful day an Sophy and Jason even got to ride on a camel.

When they left the guide whispered in Sophy's ear "There is a secret entrance to the Spinx.  Watch the video and decide for yourself...."

  • Do your own research and choose one of the pyramids and find extra information on it - you can watch a video or do some reading.
  • Have a look at other activities or places you can visit in Egypt
  • The writing of the old Egyptian that are found in the pyramids are called what?

  • You are going to design your own hieroglyphics - you must decide on an 'icon' for each letter of the alphabet and then by using your own 'hieroglyphics' write at least two sentences.
  • Give the key to your hieroglyphics to your friend and let them try and figure out what you wrote.

Great! I love this history!

Your story for the pyramids made me eager to visit the place.
Thnx for sharing with us.

Oh, Egyptians! Just like Greek and Romans, they were the main technology developers of the old era! Making my article about paper, I discovered they invented Papyrus, which basically was the plant's leaves cut into strips and interlaced with each other to make a paper where they wrote on mostly using carbon based mixtures. The book of death (the most famous text from the ancient Egypt) was made from those materials. They were amazing architects, writers and inventors, and the most important thing they loved cats! Did you know they lost against the Persians because the archers were thrown cats from the Persian's catapults so they didn't dare to shoot their arrows, therefore they lost and were invaded.

O my goodness thank you this is so interesting - yes these people were far ahead of their time

Excillent post dear @anneke
