Social conflict is a form of interaction between two different groups, the interaction is competition, threats, destruction, disputes, or fights will even be the cause of brawl. In Indonesia, social conflicts often adorn the news on television screens. It is not surprising that social conflicts are common in Indonesia because Indonesia is a country with a diverse population, ranging from ethnicity, religion, and race. The diversity of the population is not always able to harmonize in social relations. If ethnic / religious / racial differences differ and are unable to address these differences gracefully, it will often be followed by a dispute to lead to social conflict.
In addition to differences, there are still other causes of social conflict, including:

  1. Individual Differences
Each individual has a different mindset and feelings in dealing with a thing. Sometimes two different individuals of a group may experience discord because of different thoughts and feelings. These two individuals could have caused social conflict when each of them came from different social groups. Someone who is in a particular social group usually has a common perception in dealing with something. Then, when one member of a particular social group is at loggerheads with one of the members of the social group that will arise, social conflict arises as an attempt to defend the disputed individuals in an attempt to maintain their own perceptions.

  2. Cultures that are Different
The culture of a culture is usually because there is a certain mindset in it. The existence of certain groups of people must have different cultures. Each particular group of people is usually formed because of the same pattern of thinking. Two distinct groups of people with different cultural patterns can lead to social conflict. Cultural differences are often the main cause of social conflict. For example, a person from A group married and entered a community group B. Unfortunately, he could not adapt the culture in group B and instead proudly use culture A in group B. It then caused social disputes and conflicts between group A and group si B.

  3. Different Interests
Social conflict is often caused by different interests. Conflicts of interest often occur in the political, economic, and other realms. For example, the government issues a specific policy package in dealing with economic issues. Unfortunately, there are pros and there is a cons with the policy. Between the pro and the counter groups may experience conflict in order to defend their respective interests which they consider to be the right choice.

Some say that the unlikely change is the change itself. Change is a sure thing. Changes that occur gradually usually do not feel and still feel reasonable. However, too rapid changes have the potential to cause social conflict. Social changes that are too fast can lead to shock and rejection as they usually conflict with the existing culture.

  1. Social Change is too Fast
Various things have the potential to cause social conflict. But most of the conflicts are caused by differences, whether individual differences, cultures, or interests. Social conflicts, inevitably will also have an impact in life, whether the lives of conflicting communities or communities that have nothing to do with a particular conflict. The impact can be negative, but it can also be positive

Here is an explanation of the impact of social conflicts:
Negative impact

Negative impacts are unavoidable impacts. Conflicts of any kind will inevitably have a negative effect on the lives of the people in conflict. These negative impacts include:

  1. Rift of Inter-Group Relations - A conflict between groups is inevitable, even if it has been reconciled, must still leave hate in some individuals within a particular group. Of course, the fracture of relationships between conflicting groups is inevitable and could be the cause of abuse of authority.

  2. Personality Changes to Individuals - Individuals in certain social groups will experience a change of nature. Usually they will be filled with feelings of anger, suspicion, and hate those who are opposed to the conflict. Sometimes a person's personality will gradually become a person with anxiety. He will not feel at ease for fear that the conflict will happen again. He was overwhelmed with suspicion if the group that had been in conflict with them again ignited the problem.

  3. Damage to Property and Fall of Mortality - A destructive social conflict can result in the destruction of property owned by a particular social group. Social conflicts are often followed by the actions of group members from each of the camps to act by relying on violence. Damage to shelter, public facilities, and so forth, is concrete evidence that social conflicts are badly affected property ownership of each group.

In addition, violence that occurs during social conflicts also leads to casualties. Either the wounded from each group, or even the victim died from one or each group. Unfortunately, the loss of life from one group is usually used as an excuse for a more brutal attack, leading to greater conflict and greater losses.

  1. Occurrence of Domination and Conquest - The existence of conflicts involving two specific groups, inevitably one of them wants to show their dominance. One of the groups wanted to show that they were stronger and more powerful about something. As a result, there is a desire to conquer the opposing group.

Positive impact

Although conflicts can cause negative impacts, the reality is that conflict can also have a positive impact, including:

  1. Strengthening Group Solidarity - When a conflict occurs, each group will seek to strengthen the solidarity of each member of the group. In addition, when the competition is done correctly and if honesty takes precedence, there will be alignment within the group to create cohesiveness.

  2. Achieving Progress - Social conflicts are not always perpetrated by violence. Social conflicts in the form of competition will make the competing group progress because of the factors of globalization. The rapidly growing society, will try to adapt and make it compete to have advanced civilization in its group.

  3. Shaping Personality - Social conflicts made with good competition will foster the honest nature of competing groups. Honesty will grow a person's social life and self.

Various consequences can occur when social conflicts occur. Social conflicts that are relying on violence and anarchism will largely have a negative impact. However, when social conflict is in the form of fair competition, it is able to create progress from competing groups.
