Blog: Growing Up In Brooklyn | Fight Club! (Part 2)
Part 2: (link to Part One below)
Some guys from my old grade school contacted me a few years ago and said, "Hey, you're the guy who started the REAL Fight Club!" And they told me how they still talked about it all the time. I said, "Well, remember the first rule of fight club is..." and we laughed and laughed.

I ended bullying in that school for a time. We fought all the big scary kids that were bussed in from the housing projects, and the older punks from our own neighborhood. We practiced sportsmanlike conduct and showed respect for one another. We shook hands after each match. We became equals, friends, and for awhile there was peace. Then surprisingly I beat this one kids ass and he ran crying to the principal. Anthony was the biggest bully in school, in the neighborhood actually. He was literally a drop out the day he fought me. He called me out, so I had to fight him. But he was so scary. Terrifying, really. Because he seemed so much older than all of us.
Then his face hit the concrete floor of the court yard, and he was bleeding all over his 'wife beater' t-shirt. My right hook was lethal but I hit him with a full round house punch that knocked him down hard. In that moment, I was King.
No one could have fought him and won. I was shocked. I thought for sure I was going to get beat up pretty bad. I can't even describe how afraid I was. But sometimes we have to face our fears.
I had no idea how strong I was until I took down that monster. He was the most evil muthafucker around. Then suddenly he's just this crying, bleeding, Sicilian, little bitch boy running to the principal to get us all in trouble.
Everyone got suspended from school.
Except me.
Because my Mother was the President of the PTA. She hated what I had done, but she had to admit I did stop all the bullying. My dad, of course, loved it and they fought with the principal to make sure I didn't get suspended (or arrested).
The sad part was no one was allowed to play with me anymore. My friends were forbidden by their parents from even walking near my house.
And the blue eyed devil was born... 😅
