#6. How to Stop Being Overwhelmed on Steemit

in #steemit7 years ago

Steemit is like an ocean of content, and if you’re not careful, it is easy to drown with information overload.

Here’s how not to drown and stay afloat.

3 Simple Tips:

1. Identify your niche: A niche is a specific area which you are most interested in.

People write all sorts of content on Steemit, whether it is Cryptocurrency, Politics, Health, Finance, Relationships, Self-help etc.

What you need to do is identify the topic you are most interested in.

So let’s say in my case I am most interested in self-help, that branches out into multiple sub-topics. But my main niche is self-help.

So the first thing you need to do is identify your niche.

Use the tags, or the search function, and you will get plenty of content to look around.

2. The 80% Rule: Once you identify your niche, spend around 80% of your Steemit time on reading and writing in your niche.

If you’re new to Steemit, and assuming you have 60 minutes of Steemit time, dedicate 40 minutes to reading and following people in your niche, and connect with the bloggers by upvoting and commenting on their posts.

Do not discount the value of doing this, a lot of people make the “mistake” (and I say it in quotes, because it isn’t really a mistake, but not the best use of your time when you’re starting out), of cranking out content, and try to be all over the place.

If you post self-help today, and then crypto content tomorrow, and then politics the day after, you’re confusing people. They don’t know what you stand for.

Birds of the same feather flock together, so please don’t change the color of your feather every day! They’ll have a hard time identifying with you. ;)

So the remaining 20 minutes can be spent on writing a post in YOUR niche.

When you start out your 80% isn’t posting, but networking with people in your niche.

But 20% is still important, do post at least once every day.

3. Build Strong Connections: While you will see a lot of bot activity on Steemit, we’re all still humans, and we need to connect.

Don’t expect the people who have come before you to take notice of your efforts, just by posting one or two random comments or upvotes.

You need to spend time, really engage with their content. This is when you will earn their respect, and respect will convert to being rewarded for your efforts, through comment and post upvotes.

Well, that is it! Did you think I was going to give you a long to-do list?

So it is in fact quite simple, and let me summarize it for you:

1. Identify your niche.

2. Spend 80% of your Steemit time around your niche. And 20% on posting articles in your niche. (This balance may change later, when you have established yourself).

3. Go slow. Forge connections with the influencers in your niche.

In essence, you don’t need to overwhelm yourself with topics you don’t have an affinity towards, even if they seem to be on the trending list. Ignore it. In this case ignorance is bliss.

Stick to less: Have lesser, but stronger connections. And grow gradually. Soon you will find out, less is more!

Cheers!

P.S. I don’t know if you noticed, but even though I spoke about Steemit here, I am still within my niche: Self-help. The main focus being, keeping you from being overwhelmed.

So this is how you can write content in and around your main niche.

Great post! I believe these things are key to success here. I've been using these same things and its been effective so far.

Awesome! Appreciate the feedback. Cheers!

My favorite point is the last one in building connections which helps that niche more and more with that 80/20 rule. Thanks for the great advice. I'm Oatmeal.

@witnesslife - these are some excellent suggestons. I would hope that I could focus on one niche, but sometimes I have many ideas for writing a post. I does get confusing as you say. Great post!

Most of my time here is spent on reading. I say photography is my niche but I want to expand beyond that because there are lot of interests there too just like these self-helps. I check on articles that makes me interested.

I agree that start with those steps above. In addition to the right motivation and determination in what you would want to accomplish here. Some wanted a quick scheme here. That is achievable if we start doing the right thing. It rings true that interaction is the top key in platforms like this. We build relationships and grow that way. I get more earnings in commenting than on my own blogs. It's fun and at the same time a learning process. Every day there is so much to learn here in steemit.

I guess I should identify my niche, I enjoy the variety on Steemit. I'm thinking it is probably going to be creativity.

Well, that's a wonderful niche. You can talk about so many things around creativity. Inspiration, technical ideas, in fact if all you did was "inspire creativity" it would probably serve you well on Steemit. Cheers!

I will probable share what I create as opposed to talking about it.

Your tips are very helpful. I do struggle with staying true to a niche for a long time. Thanks for the informative post

Glad you found it useful. Cheers!

Great advice for the minnows on steemit they will certainly benefit from this post

Great post and tips! I've been trying to post the same type of content but since I have a lot of things I like it's hard to find a niche :)

Keep exploring, and you will find your niche. Cheers!
