Steemit Project - Thoughts after Week 1

in #steemit8 years ago

I have now been on the platform for around a week, and thought it worthwhile to share a few thoughts:

  1. The steemit platform has a UI that is far superior to any others out there in the crypto ecosystem. It is easy to be a creator and release content and reasonably straight-forward to find information about how to integrate stuff (links/photos/images etc). The UI element is extremely important as it incents credible folks to invest time. On a side note, I expect Steemit to kill bitcointalk.org in the coming weeks and months.
  2. The community seems real and engaged, and is very helpful to newbies. The incentives help, but the early evidence is that the mission of the Steemit project has attracted the right kind of folks so far. Even the curation gaming bots are friendly and less obnoxious than elsewhere (or maybe that's just my feeling :))
  3. The quality of content is reasonably high, although there is patchiness in places (such as the introduceyourself topic in particular). Discovery by sub-topics is still pretty hard, there is work to be done on that front. That said, some of the opinion pieces on crypto that I have read are amongst the best I have seen anywhere (Example: https://steemit.com/bitcoin/@dnaleor/on-fungibility-bitcoin-monero-and-why-zcash-is-a-bad-idea)
  4. How do I create a setting such that I will automatically be notified when X who I follow posts anything in Topic Y? That would allow me to create power lists by topic of heavy hitters to follow.
  5. The traction momentum suggests to me that at least some of the attention Steemit has generated is from folks looking to diversify away from Ethereum, but would love to wait and watch. FWIW, the volume of Steemit reference on my Twitter feed has increased 5x to 10x over the last 3 days
  6. I think as more folks enter the platform, it will become important to manage earning expectations that they have well in advance, as the reality will lag the expectation ceteris paribus. One important vector may be for more open content here helping people understand what makes for great content with an arresting writing style. I have seen some good stuff here, but perhaps we can have those posts float right to the top of a new user's feed as he or she registers to save them the time.

All in all, I love what I am seeing so far and intend to remain committed and engaged here. Thanks for investing the time to read.

Great post. Your impressions and ideas are very useful. Bear in mind that this site is still in beta and that many more improvements are likely to come in the near future!

I want to start inviting friends because I really like the direction STEEMIT is headed in but at the same time it's so bare bones right now that I don't want them to check it out then head back to Facebook. I want them to leave Facebook behind for good and be STEEMIT for life!!! We just are not there yet. Definitely headed the right way though. Much props to the dev team...

I hear you! Lots of work ahead but great progress so far.

Absolutely! Thanks for the kind words.
