My top tips after 9 months living on Steem & Steem Dollars 👣
Yesterday I sat on this beach with tears of gratitude because now I am not just surviving on Steemit, I am making much more than I can spend, finally opening the door for investment. The whole crypto market has come alive in the last month and there are so many opportunities to buy large quantities while the price is still low.
I will be giving you my top three undervalued coins in this article.
What's my story?
I am a London born filmmaker dedicated to travelling the world with my family. We came to Bali two years ago for a film job and never left... because in August 2016 I discovered Steemit and started learning as much as I could about this brave new world.
In ten days we are moving to the South of France where we plan to acquire a mobile home and drive around Europe into Northern Africa, all thanks to Steemit & the investments I have made with the Steem & SBD.
I had no knowledge of crypto prior to August 2016.
One and a half years to completely change my life
I have worked very hard over the last year to establish myself on this platform (currently ranked 115 in rep) so I am not going to tell you it was easy. But I am going to tell you that it is possible to turn Steemit into your main source of income if you commit yourself now during these early days before this platform goes mainstream.
What are my top tips (for content producers)?
I do not claim to have the answer for everyone, as each person must find their own way here but if you follow my tips they will put you in a good position to find your own voice and set your sights firmly upon the desired goal.
- Post regularly
It doesn't have to be every day, but it does have to be every week. Building a following requires consistency. And regularly reminding them of your awesomeness is an important step towards achieving this. Personally I aim to post twice a day, one quote from my good old friend Abraham and one article written from my heart. I don't always achieve this, but that is what I aim for.
- Consistent quality
Feel out how many hours per day you have for Steemit and establish a precedent... then stick to it! Make your content relevant, quote any sources clearly, fill your post with strong images, breaking it up to simplify the reading process. Some people just skim read so bear this in mind when creating the headings for each section.
- Think outside the box
Think not what steemit can do for you but what you can do for steemit. What are we missing here? Fill in the gaps with your enthusiasm. @steemshop, @steemholidays & @charitysteemit are all examples of my own exploration outside the box.
- Post promotion in steemit.chat & discord
I know it can be painful to post promote after finishing an article but it is an important opportunity not to be missed. Many tell me it makes no difference to their pay-out. Whilst this may be true now, it only takes one Whale who resonates with your work to change your fortune forever.
- Thumbnail, title & first line
You have three opportunities to draw people in to your article. So, use them wisely! Get across as much info as you can without repeating yourself. You can see at the top of this post how I enjoy taking a photo from my life and infusing it with the steemit branding always reminding my FB followers where I have gone! Sometimes I will add a few words to expand on my message. If you are going to add words make sure you have as few as possible and that they are readable in the thumbnail.
Here is my last 'main' article which is a good example of how to maximise these three opportunities.
- Become a steemit evangelist!
The people you help now will become the people who help you in the future. One of the first things I did upon understanding the mechanics of steemit was to set up a Facebook group (aspiring steemit whales & dolphins) with the intention of helping others make the transition. The group is around 600 strong now and many whom I helped a year ago are now doing very well here.
In addition to this I gave a talk in the heart of Bali to a group of crypto enthusiasts. Sharing what I knew and encouraging people to join me.
- Remind your old world where you have gone!
Facebook & YouTube were my main platforms two years ago. So I changed my FB banner to look like this...
...and made a bunch of YouTube films referring to steemit.
I also created a YouTube channel dedicated to helping others for free. See HERE
- Start investing
As soon as you are able, start selling your SBD and perhaps some of your Steem to invest into the quickly growing marketplace. You can always put some Steem back into your account once you have expanded your holdings. Personally I use Bittrex & Binance to do my investing. These seem to cover most of the coins I am interested in.
This film tells you how to transfer to Bittrex.
Once you have sold for BTC you have a plethora of options available to you. Like I said the whole market is expanding right now so you will find it hard to go wrong, but it would be prudent to research your investment prior to buying. Ask yourself the following simple questions to ensure it is not a scam:
How long has the coin been around?
Is it growing in value?
Is it based on a solid idea, fulfilling a need?
Does it have a high volume of movement?
Three undervalued coins
Of course, no one can tell you the future with certainty but it is my feeling that the following three coins are worth snapping up before they shoot above a dollar. I could tell you why I believe in these coins but instead I am going to encourage you to do your own research.
Burst
Digibyte
Doge
All of these coins are available on Bittrex and currently under $0.15
Here are the graphs showing one day candles and the growth over the last month.
In conclusion
Steemit has transformed the way I live my life and it is my intention now to help as many people as I can experience this same freedom.
I am here to answer any questions should you have them.

Can you explain why do you think BURST DOGE and Digibyte have big potential. I understand that you intuition is good but maybe your prognosis is based on something else like fundamental analysis.
In truth I have a man on the inside with a much better knowledge than myself. He mentioning these coins to me for a year ago and I ignored him. Last month i check on them and couldn't believe how much they had grown. So, I went all in with 10,000 of each. You will find plenty of films on YouTube explaining why they are sound investments, each one very different reasons.
What my instinct tells me is that this gravy train can't last forever, so be ready to pull out and get it back into fiat. But for now... the only way is UP!
Great post and very inspirational - chock full of good tips and advice. I agree: Spread the word of Steemit far and wide!! It's an awesome journey ...
That which we give out comes back to us in spades ;)
Interesting. I am new and honestly super confused. I have blogs in several niches and people in all of them told me to come here. But I make a living off of those sites. Can I repost their content here? Also, do I have do invest to really make traction? I have played around here a bit, but am trying to see why I would do better here than I do with regular blogging.
If you're already doing well elsewhere, why would you change what you're doing?
Steem may be useful after you test it, but if you're getting results in a different area, you are trying to repair what's not broken. One of my friends tested SteemIt for a month and saw no results. Like you, he was doing well on his other sites. Only add SteemIt if you're seeing success on the platform. As you know, time is expensive - you never get it back.
So run a test. See if you can obtain results. If you have successful sites in niches, you should already have a good idea of what success looks like. No need to rebuild a wheel.
Testing for a bit is pretty much my plan. I figure I will post things here that don't fit well on my niche sites. Mostly travel posts and photography. But I was curious about reposting some related items as well. Mainly items that I think are good but do not perform as well as I think they deserve to perform on my other sites. But I don't want to confuse the plagiarism bots nor do I want to remove them entirely from my sites.
Personally I would give it 6 months as a test! I know time is precious but it is much better to be earning crypto than fiat. And it will be no problem using your existing blog to transfer here. Just make sure you quote your source!
Good to know. Thanks!!!!
The only thing I would add is this: I was making average on YouTube before Steemit and it took around 6months on Steemit before I was doing better here than YouTube. And now, a year on there is no question in my mind I made the right decision. The main reason is because I earn crypto every day now. Not fiat. So, this can be invested easily and grown much faster than the fiat...
Thanks Sam. You helped me get into Steem and just like you said, I am now helping others. ibaldibwent To steemfest because of you and am loving this social experiment. So much better than Facebook as the feeling here is one of helping others. Of corse it’s not perfect but it’s fun and interesting and think it’s evolving. Well have to wait and see.
Danny! It's always so great to see your words under my posts :)
Wish i had more time for curating and commenting under the work of others. It will be a more calm pace of life for me in France and for sure I will have more time.
Am so pleased you are feeling the awesomeness of this platform. It is very exciting times for all of us :)
Onward & Upward!!!
I can't think of a better "pay for performance" platform than Steemit. I've been reading so many posts of good people being able to pay for a full winter supply of feed for their farms, being able to move ahead with projects, putting a little toward their hobbies even. Am just amazed at the bigger picture and the unlimited potential we all have here.
Universal synchronicity brought me to the platform and the vibes will keep me here. Resteemed this post on, it is a gem.
Universal synchronicity brought me here too! I met a random guy in the jungle who told me about steemit. Without him I would most likely still be accepting the meagre rewards from my YouTube films.
Onward & Upward we fly together! 🌠
And to think Sam, when it comes to Steemit, we're just getting started. You will one day be able to look back at this quaint little time "when STEEM was only worth a few dollars." You'll be broadcasting live from your advanced Moonbase, while I'll finally have my UK golden visa. Glad you're doing well. It's good to have options, isn't it? I've got my Tesla all picked out. Though the Porsche Spyder looks good too.

Someone really should take the whole Moon Lambos meme to the next level! I've yet to see any Moon Lambo graphic.
haha! Love all these big dream we have now :)
I am banking on steem going $100 and beyond.... and the future is looking very Porsche-like indeed!
Awesome stuff here @samstonehill I hope one day to be as influential of a user such as yourself... I am confident that I can achieve this through hard work and dedication to the platform. I wish I would have heard of steemit much earlier, but at least I am here now, and things seem to be blasting off for steemit as a whole, so I really can't complain!
Really stoked to see you undervalue both DGB and DOGE bc I have recently added both of these coins to my portfolio.. maybe one day I will take some profits and invest back into my steemit acct bc I am definitely here for the long haul.... The more SP the better :-)
Have fun on your journey, much respect from @conradsuperb
You said it.... the more SP the better. It's great to earn from this platform but even better when we can help others do the same :)
And not to worry about your timing of entry here. We are still very much in the early days. Facebook was in Beta for a few years before it really kicked off...
I completely agree! Can't wait til my VP hits above a dollar... will be so much more rewarding for other users, as well as myself. I think 2018 is the year for steemit, we shall see ;-)
That is pretty darn impressive you're able to live off your Steem and Steem Dollars! I have always been intrigued with Bali! How are you liking it?
Loving it. And a little bit sad to be leaving in a week after 2 years here.
It's not been easy living off this platform.... though in the last few months everything has changed.
And the future is looking very bright for all of us here :)
I can imagine it is incredibly difficult!! Where is the next stop?!
I was thinking about almost every one of these points today! And evangelizing has been much easier with STEEM and SBDs doing what they've done over the last month. The future here is so exciting - thank you for this tutorial. Hopefully my new friends coming on board will need this!
My pleasure to provide this vital info. When I get back to France next week I will most likely start producing more regular tutorials on the YouTube site I mentioned. And yes, the future is very exciting indeed! 🎉
@samstonehill, such a beautiful post right from the heart, so pure in content. You are a good soul. I have been away from steemit for last 5 months owing to personal tragedy. But guess it's time for me to pick up and start moving and get some good quality stuffs on steemit. Your post made my day. Thanks :)
Many thanks for your positive words. I do my best here to share my enthusiasm to inspire others. No question this platform has changed my life and opened the door to crypto world, which I know nothing about before.
Sorry to hear about your personal tragedy. I have seen many write from their hearts here expressing their feelings around tragedy. This can really help us 'get it out' and you will be surprised by how supportive this community can be :)
All the best to you my friend and see you around on Steemit!
