Some worries and hopes about whales and folks

in #steemit7 years ago (edited)

Some worries about Steem’s universe
I’d like to share in jolty verse.
Steem seems to offer to human race
Gainful creation in cyberspace
From the dialogue eternal
⁃ plumbed by an open-source kernel -
between writers and readers,
and artists and viewers,
and the musician
and those who listen.

Yet, as with all this world has got -
In dreaming of Steem there is a But:

The rule of whales gives rise to this call
And the fact that such might exists at all:
This unbalanced sway over others’ wealth,
And that what they want remains largely in stealth.

While forgers forge they ask in doubt
why whales should be more competent
To judge what‘s quality content
Than others with less clout.

Will this not lead to forgers learning
What pleases whales and what does not
and therefore tend to bend their thought
in whales’ favour - to keep on earning?

Or will we have whales fighting whales
as we do witness presently
about a guy who‘s charting tales
Prompt hymns and rages endlessly.

We witness commoners already
Cheer a “Good Whale” who is ready
To speak for them and the common cause.
Appreciating that - it still gives me pause:
It’s weird! For it’s a sceenary
As if from another century
And not from 2018’s cyberspace,
And sure not from a platform’s space
Whose merits are supposed to be
The voting power and gain of many.

While forging my thoughts into these rhymes
A thought appeared along these lines:
Whales, keep your steem – just one idea –
but stripped of power to a degree
that levels the field
for everyone’s yield.

For ponder this, whales, in your tower:
trust depends on checks on power.
Oligarchs have other goals
Than common, ordinary souls.
Where people are just pawns of Masters
They’ll leave to other platforms‘ pastures.

This is my worry and while there’s still
trust in the benevolent will
of founding fathers one would hope
their constitution has a scope
of growth in wisdom
towards a system
that instills trust
and gives Steem thrust.
