SBD (Steem Dollars) are supposed to be equal to one US dollar. This is because many people in the world are familiar with the US dollar and it's worth, so it's a nice easy currency to work with. SBD was supposed to be a stable currency you can transact in without all those wild fluctuations that cryptos are prone to.
