Is stealing an idea considered as plagiarism?

in #steemit8 years ago (edited)

Plagiarism was always problem on Steemit and some people just don't feel any shame while doing things that can harm other people's work and reputation. There are many different way which you can plagiarize others, you can copy their text, steal their pictures and images and present them as yours... and in many cases, these plagiarists will not be noticed and marked as thieves. But is stealing an idea considered as plagiarism? Well, that's something to discuss because the idea doesn't have to be explained the same way by original author and the one who was inspired by original author and made his own work.

When you think that you got a good idea, somewhere in this world somebody probably already HAD the same idea.

So it is very hard to claim that you are the owner od an idea. You have to be a pretty genius scientist and have very advanced brain to claim that you "own the idea". Because you're so smart and nobody ever had that idea...

But the rest of us also have ideas. And it is possible that two, three or two hundred people on different sides of the world come up with the same idea at the same time! So, if an idea was born on different locations at the same time, it is pointless to claim that one particular author owns that idea!

But Steemit is different.

One starts with an idea and posts about it! If his post was successful, it will probably inspire few of his followers to start writing about same things. Is that plagiarism? NO! You just opened the door for others, let them in and now they act like they need to spread the word... if you have this sort of followers who will take your ideas and write about same things but using their own words, that can mean only one thing: that you have awesome ideas! But in almost all cases they will not name you as an original author of that idea! Because they use their own words, you can't do nothing!

If you find your own ideas in some texts of users that do not follow you, they probably had the same ideas like you but explained them differently. But when someone follows you, comments your posts, supports your ideas and then, two-three days later, you see very similar title with very similar text but with completely the same message... and no one mentioned that you inspired them for that!

That's what happens to me lately! I supported some authors on their beginnings, gave them some advice, resteemed when they needed... but few days later, I often find their posts, telling exactly the same things as me but using few different words... In June 2017, when the whole stampedo of new users came on the network, I made a series of posts called GREAT STEEMERS TO FOLLOW, so what you think, how many of my newer followers back then started to do the same thing using even the same title? It was not comfortable feeling for me, especially because nobody mentioned me as an original source of the idea? There are many other examples, some guys really do that!

I don't want any fights, I support many people here and I think that I helped a lot to some users. I will not name anyone for stealing my ideas, but you should know that this is not very nice of you! I helped how I could and I want still support you, but it is time for you to grow up, explore the wide world and come up with your own ideas! Thank you!

These users are short-lived!

Well, you wouldn't believe how many of them are here and for longer time. If you search a little bit, you'll find your own lines but shaped differently.. thank you!

I know that, but I don't care, there's too many things that stink here :))

O yeah... trending page often smells badly;)

Thank you for posting @dumar022.

There have been copycats of your great idea, it is true......however none of them have the courtesy or the experience you brought to your idea.

These users will be short lived as pepe.maya said in her comment.....Why....because they do not bring personal experience nor unique character to the idea.

Your posts recommending who to follow....treated the individual as a person and was based on your personal experience...making the posts unique and alive. Some of these copycats are pointing out meal tickets......telling untruths....and do not follow or upvote the people they have put on their lists.

For everyone who posts successful content.....there are those who will copy. Whether it is you, pepe.maya, myself or others. We should continue to do what sets our work apart and that is original work. Be a trend setter.....a first mover.

Thank you for the opportunity to think on these things.

Wishing you and yours all the best. Cheers.

Thank you! Funny thing: some people who took my ideas earned better rewards than I did! So I wish them luck

There is a saying ' You are only as original as the reference to your source is obscured' Everything we see in life can be a source of inspiration but to just parrot it on is not originality, I see this alot in my field. The truth will out in the end and these people will realises they have spent all their time copying and not learning how to formulate their own ideas, which of course will be bad for them in the end. I think you must add to the idea or else you are just a 'Copy cat, dirty rat, sitting on the door mat'. In some ways you should be honored because as another saying goes 'Imitation is the greatest form of flattery' .

Congratz, your post has been read, approved and resteemed by a human 😊!

"But is stealing an idea considered as plagiarism? "
Great question but so difficult to answer !
As example I wrote about FB VS Steemit , Bitcoin VS Steem, the golden rules, hard fork ....etc.. a lot of steemains wrote about this before and after ..

I made also a lot of banner and was used by others everywhere..

To be honest , you are right .. it is a kind of plagiarism
I agree fully with you everyone of us must come up ( at least must try) new ideas

By the way , Was in my plan to write about steemit card but after I read this post I will not write it
Thanks for sharing

Lol, I haven't written about Steemit card, you probably confused me with someone else;) it is not about having same ideas, it's about those who will comment on my post and then write the same post tomorrow but using other words without mentioning me as the source of the idea

I know you did not write mate
But I want to say a lot of users wrote about steemit card
The reason why I will not write

And why should you, everybody already made prostitution from that card idea

Not only about steemit card about everything !
There a lot of ideas with ton of post that made by a lot of bloggers !
I think is very difficult to be controlled..

Anyway really I like your point of view and I will try to come up with something new ..like Market Brief, Bitcoin trend .. etc

It is great what you do and when people have the same idea in the same time, it is not plagiarism

Hi I like your idea for this story. Might 'steal' the idea, not copy your story. I think you touched something pretty simple here:

"..the idea doesn't have to be explained the same way by original author.."

Unless we're able to read each others minds soon we'll be stuck with always having to explain ideas. If someone obviously steals your way of presenting it or some of your research, atleast it shouldn't be to hard to prove here who wrote it first. After that it's up to how consious the audience is I guess to make the right upvotes?

This story probably helps with that so I upvoted. Comment on and prove when you feel like someone is stealing too much. Hopefully they'll loose followers. Thank you!

Thank you for this nice comment

Stealing intellectual property (idea) is considered a plagiarism if you can prove it. It is very hard to prove it, like you said anyone can explain idea differently. As it was shown in movie "Social Network" where Winklevoss twins sued Mark Zuckemberg. They presented him idea of somehing like Facebook via e-mail, they even had more more e-mails about it. But they couldn't prove it.

On Steemit, you don't have anyone to whom you could prove something... like court or police

Many news channels just rewrite each other. It is not forbidden on the Internet. This can not even be forbidden. Google perceives every news as unique.

Yes I know that, but there is something called honesty between mutual supporters. There are no any rules but you own principle

You're right. Awesome ideas should be credited - especially if you then go on to use the awesome idea.

Credit where credit's due.

Sometimes, an idea can be spotted, read, absorbed and then is set off inside the mind of that reader and it's not until later that a new awesome idea comes from that first one.

Sometimes, you can genuinely forget where you saw the inspiration and that's a sad fact of our very human brains, we do forget.

If I've ever done that, I'm genuinely sorry, I do always try to give credit... but my mind... when it latches onto something, it can keep hold of it for a while and not spit it out again for months.

Good Luck! and keep coming up with those awesome ideas. You have the advantage, those that can only copy you have to wait for you to come up with the next new thing.

Thank you and you are right! Our ideas can inspire others to develop their own ideas and that's actually nice! But when you see your own ideas written two days after you did, that is different
