Steemit's Disturbing Ads Policy!

in #steemit7 years ago (edited)

While I was looking around and discovering more about Steemit, my eyes paused at their Privacy Policy. M jaw dropped when I read this disturbing part (I pinched myself, no it's not a dream):

We may partner with third-party advertisers, ad networks, and analytics providers to deliver advertising and content targeted to your interests and to better understand your use of the Services. These third parties may collect information sent by your computer, browser, or mobile device in response to a request for content, such as unique identifiers, your IP address, or other information about your computer or device.

I couldn't believe what I was reading. The only reason I joined Steemit was to escape those advertisers bombarding almost every website on the planet.

The good news is (for now), my Firefox addons (AdBlock, Ghostery, uMatrix) aren't showing any third-party advertisers on Steemit. But according to that policy, Steemit might turn into Facebook one day! Is it possible that Steemit has already partnered and is doing it secretly behind our backs? Suddenly I'm having mixed feelings about Steemit...

If any developer is reading this, please enlighten us.

Sorry to ruin your friday night!

Try using Brave. I have been using it for a few days and I really like it. Enough to recommend it.

My Firefox is highly customized with a lot of addons and bookmarks. I can't move to another browser. But the browser is not the point, it's the policy that is bothering me.

isn't brave a browser for bat tokens thats all about advertising. doesn't seem like a good recommendation for this person. (I don't know about brave thats just what I heard)

I know little about it and recently started using it (brave). It has actually taken away all ads and it loads much faster than chrome. It is related with BAT, but each has their own purpose. Anyway, just trying to help. All the best.

Cool I'll take a look at it

I appreciate the thought, but my browser is pretty set up to fight advertisers and trackers 🙂
My concern is for the privacy-unaware fellow steemians, and for the principle on which Steem was built on.

wow..that is pretty disturbing Drakos. hmmmmm. I would definitely like to know what the folks involved have to say about this. You would think that by owning 49% of all the currency would be enough.

I think advertising would be great for steemit, allow more revenue stream besides us... assuming of course the revenue was distributed across the blockchain
