Point Me to the Complaints Department: Things that Annoy me on Steemit
Dear Steemians,
This is an open "letter", feel free to comment your complaints below and hopefully this may initiate some change.
- The Spam: we live and breathe it but on here it just seems like I'm drowning in it. There are plenty of good creators out there but the spam is terrible. Isn't there some way to filter out those who fail to put some effort into their posts?
- Introductions: I've noticed that when I introduced myself I received a lot of attention and upvotes which got me off to a flying start. In contrast, @ness.james signed up and many of the individuals failed to vote for her and her post but instead chose to comment and then vote for themselves. I find this behaviour spammy and bot-like. I'm sure other new Steemians have experienced this before but maybe feel they don't have a voice (well technically they don't because of their lack of Steem Power) Should self-voting be disabled? I'd vote for that!
- Finding new content: with so many sections and tags I find it difficult to filter through all the spam and find decent posts.
- Notifications: I really don't get notifications if I'm mentioned in a post (should I?) and I would like to. It makes it so much easier to join the conversation if you know you're already a part of it. Regardless I rarely get notifications and have to click around to discover what's going which is really time consuming.
- Comments unrelated to my posts or to anything really just make me annoyed. Especially when I put time and effort into writing something only to be inundated with partial replies in broken English which have nothing to do with anything.
On the positive side to balance things out I love the platform and other content creators - I wish I had more time to participate and comment on their fantastic contributions but the spam makes it difficult. The support for new content creators is excellent and I love having my posts picked up and receiving new feedback. I love the fact that there are no ads on here also.
Being a Beta site there are differing expectations and I hope that things change for the best in the future. Adding money to the equation really brings out the desperate side of people when it should bring out their individuality and creativity but never mind I guess.
If you have a solution to my annoyances please share them below to shut me up ;)
Thanks for reading :)
I'd have some suggestions. For the spam, well, there's always gonna be spam, especially if there's money involved. My solution is follow people that make quality content that you enjoy, upvote them, and just skip the spam. Censoring them is not a good move in my opinion, this always gets abused eventually. The #indroduyourself being abused is annoying, and it does mean some people get more noticed than others. I know I put some work in my posts and don't get much traffic, but when someone if alot of steempower comes by, they likely appreciate it, and those that do follow me get some quality content to read. So, that's ok :)
Self voting should still be on, but it should be allowed for comments that generate responses to it; if it has replies, only then should it be allowable to be self voted, that's my compromise solution :)
On the notification aspect, I really think that should be a thing, and regarding comments unrelated to the post, well, what can you do? Just ignore them.
It's good to see you started a discussion, and steemit does need some tweaking, for sure, but overall, I think it is a good platform. Here's hoping for more support and a better future for it and its users!
Thanks for your response these are some great compromises :)
I have to agree we cannot do much about spam, and taking an active role in the content you view is probably the best step we can take until something is implemented by the developers. I can never predict which of my posts will become popular and I think this is driving me to post more. For instance, this rant gained me more votes than my photography advice post (same day) which is the primary content I write usually.
I would love to see this discussion continued from all types of content producers. Rather than contribute to the system people everywhere could be actively trying to improve it. Here's to the future! Followed! :)
No problem, mate!
I don't know what the solutions is, all I know I don't want flagging campaigns or something similar. I came to steemit precisely to avoid that kind of thing. There will always be trolls, and I frankly enjoy them once in a while. There will always be extremists and spammers, but they will lose a rational conversation because they don't bring anything new or productive to the table. And I still think most people are mostly rational.
If you visited my blog, you'll see that most of my posts are about games, but I delve into politics, space related stuff, and sometimes I post about what I've done. Most don't get much attention, and well, so be it, I don't want to turn to clickbait stuff. I want people to actually enjoy what I write about, and I'm sure that there are people who do, and that's fine for me :)
Maybe, then, some things are best left to their own devices :))
I don't have much time for games but I still do 3D CGI on occasion - I posted awhile ago about getting into it and being involved for people completely new to the space (for gamers and those interested in CGI for films etc.) because many gamers are just users without a clue as how things are made beyond a vague idea about wireframes. I noticed that branching out into this new area didn't really achieve the success I thought it would so I just stick to writing photography tutorials for beginners. Being niche is key to building an audience before expanding your topics and attracting more followers. I've had my posts picked up a few times and one of them even trended for a brief moment but it's really the luck of the draw with these things. Keep Steemin' and good things will surely come ;)
Sure, being niche is key, but not too niche I think. And of course, you need to be good at it. Don't get discouraged, you need a bit of luck but hey, I for one do it because I wanna share thoughts and start discussions :)
You surely succeeded in that here, and, well, my up is worth just 1 cent, but, I might check in later too :)
Also, I for one would be interested in 3d modelling, though I think that is best taught in video form rather than text with stills. Just keep at it if it's fun for you :)
Definitely I have to agree too, without a specific skill you're not going to be able to offer the readers anything worth their time. I love having discussions in the comments more than writing the actual posts!
I love 3D modelling and I'm okay doing it I'd say maybe beyond beginner but not advanced by any means. Personally when I watch tutorials they're always too time-consuming with the author advertising themselves and chatting before they actually start the project. Written tutorials are easy once you've mastered the basics of the interface but video are probably better for beginners. If you want to model start with really simply objects like cups. :)
Yeah, sometimes advertisements are annoying. I get why they do it, but there's a fine line between being informative and outright constant shilling.
And I agree on the format chosen. Most people prefer video, at least to start off. Once you understand the basics, I guess text is fine :)
I prefer posting myself, and good discussions, but they don't generally take off.
Shut you up - not a chance .!.!.! Scream from the rooftops brother. The fact is, it is almost impossible to sort through all of the spam in order to get to good quality content. I have read several posts that were well researched, well structured, and professionally written, only to receive very few upvotes and disappear into the noise - on the other side of that coin (pun intended), I open a post that has a well written title only to find the article is horribly bad / some flat out unreadable, but has made $65 in rewards. I believe we could partially solve this by first, limiting the use of the bots, and second by making the curation rewards a higher percentage of the overall pot than what is currently allocated - because right now there is very little incentive for anyone to spend time sorting through it all and actually curating... Great post - will be watching for your next one...
Thanks for your thoughts :) Some are part of collectivites that seem to just vote for their own without bothering to read the articles.
Limiting the use of bots might help but I wonder if the majority of curators who collect various posts use bots to collect information about prospective users to create their articles - those articles do help new users achieve exposure so maybe bots should only be used under certain circumstances and not entirely for personal gain. Go figure that this post gave me more attention than my other post about photography haha :)
