Steemit Things I've Learned In My First 9 Days - #3

in #steemit7 years ago (edited)

I'm going to write a series of things I've learned here... as I learn them. I will keep them short and to the point to not waste too much of anyone's time. They are obviously meant for the new people because frankly they (like me) probably jumped in and have to learn on the fly. (Note: this is the 3rd in the series, if you want to see the others go to the bottom of this post for the links)

-If you have any questions about what I discuss, ask them in the comment section below

-If you like what I talked about and think your followers would like to learn from it, "RESTEEM" it.
(note: you don't get paid to resteem something, you just help to spread around a message that you like)

-If you have another topic you would like me to cover next, then also reply that request in the comment section

I asked today what my fellow newbies wanted discussed, so B it is:

Your Reputation and Why It Matters

First, your "Reputation" is a major factor that influences everything here on steemit. Reputation (shown above) is simply what value you bring to the community. It is a score that is calculated based on your interactions with others and how many upvotes you get and from whom. Its a way that steemit measures and sifts through the members that are good for the system vs. those that aren't so good.

Reputation is weighted giving the larger more prominent members' opinions higher weight. So if a newbie (like us) likes you or a post/comment you made, it improves your reputation score; but if a "WHALE" likes you or a post/comment you made, it REALLY REALLY improves your reputation score. Its like the smartest or coolest guy in school endorsing you, so your rank goes up among the others.

As your reputation goes up, so does your own influence over others. People look up to their peers and strive to improve their relationships with the people they value. This helps you get more followers and get more attention to your posts, which essentially helps you get RESPECT.

So as a newbie the thing to focus on most is improving your Reputation Score.

How Can I Increase My Reputation

The best way to get an increasing reputation is to get out into the community and "engage" with others. Read other authors' posts and comment on what YOU LIKED about them. But be sincere and original, because after all it is your reputation you are trying to build. Don't copy and paste canned answers, but truly respond to others with respect.

(Helpful Hint: I have earned far more money from commenting in the comment section than from making any post I've made... Like 100x more)

I try to read at least 50 different posts a day in areas of interest to me and comment honestly when I see something important to say. The authors realize who is saying good things because they mean it (versus just trying to get an upvote), so just be genuine and open and that fact will get you the respect. The old saying: give respect and get respect!

Hint: remember anyone can read anyone else's comments and see what you are saying to others, so realize that you can't really fake being real for very long. So be genuine always ;)

Finally another way to improve your reputation is to get noticed by doing something kind for others. You'd be surprised at how many likes I've gotten from the big steemers when I decided to help others. I didn't offer to help someone for the purpose of getting their respect, but I earned some respect by helping others out here on steemit. Does that make sense?

A great place to do this is when interacting with other newbies and politely helping them learn some things that you've learned that they might not know. All the big steemers want a great and charitable community with helpful and encouraging members, that's what will make this platform more valuable. And when you realize in order for EVERYONE to make money we all need to be good steemians, you will recognize and respect those people that help others too.

How Do I Track More Carefully My Reputation Score and Points

You can track very carefully your reputation points at the following link:

https://steemd.com/@yourusername (Yes this is the same spot as your Voting Power page) ;)

a tutorial 2.JPG

Notice it is calculated to the more detailed tenth of a point, which comes in handy to see the impact of your interactions as your score grows.

If you scroll down that page on the left you will also get an EVEN BETTER look at your reputation by seeing the way the system calculates it EXACTLY

a tutorial 3.JPG

This is just another tip of something I have learned in my first 9 days. I have many more things I've learned and if people seem to find it interesting, then I will continue to prepare more of these tips that I find. It is up to you in the community to let me know if it is useful.

I want to point out that I am by no means an expert and I am just offering my humble advice based on what I have learned. If any more experienced users have more to add, I welcome them to do so and help everyone out!

Thanks for reading and I hope I can help a few people along the way :)

Those are some really good informations.Good to know thank you for sharing it with us.
I followed you :)

Thank you @pandatrex, I appreciate you telling me that you liked it.. It motivates me too :) and ps... I follow you too!

Great post! You seem like a very genuine person, so you've got a loyal follower out of me! I love the incentive on Steem it to be the kindest most supportive version of yourself. I kind of wish Facebook and Youtube would have a system like this. Then people would be less interested in trolling other people's posts.

For a newbie, you have actually done a great work finding out and learning about steemit

I can see from your post you actually know what and how to be a great Steemian.

Communication and Relation is the key of succeeding on this great platform. You even mentioned you made more earnings from commenting geniunely on peoples post which i really love. You are whale in the making, just keep your head down and keep doing what you are doing and i am pretty sure one day, You would get there

With great efforts, comes great rewards

I'm humbled @bcrafts, those are very nice compliments and I appreciate you taking the time to tell me. I also am happy to see you coming here to show everyone (especially the newbies) that the larger steemians do really read our posts and do care about the things I talked about in the post. It is this kind of affirmation that makes this site so viral and I'm very excited to be here! Thank you again and lets all have a wonderful 2018!!!

Welcome once again,

I would keep an eye on your account
You have got the indigredients of a whale in making

What a great post @davemccoy. I came across you by way of one of your comments to someone about how to tell the difference between the different Steem currencies.
I could see the genuineness of your comment in the suggestion you made.
There are 2 qualities that I see in your posts and I greatly admire them. They both by the way exemplify 2 things that Jesus spoke about in the Bible:

  1. Helping others (ideally without thought on getting something back)

Matthew 7:12
Therefore, whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.

  1. Humbleness/meekness in your comments. (Also reflected by your humble bee graphic at the end of your post)

Matthew 5:5
Blessed are the meek,
For they shall inherit the earth.

These qualities will add benefit to all those that “genuinely” copy them but it will also benefit the Steemit community at large.

Thank you, I truly appreciate your efforts.

Thank you very much @sighmanjestah, I'm truly honored that you took your time to not only read the articles/comments, but to also understand my motives and intentions. Its also nice that you tell me the spots in the bible that addresses the traits you saw in me. And while no man can be perfect, I realized a long time ago that I should always be thankful to God for my life and live it in such a way that He would be proud.

I really really appreciate the kind words and I'm thankful that we have connected here on steemit. If there is ever anything I can do for you, please don't hesitate to ask. You have made my day with this comment to me and I want you to know that!

I joined Steemit in May 2017 and was fortunate to connect with some wizened Steemians, most notably @papa-pepper and @rebeccaryan. Both of these individuals were very helpful and answered questions that someone else may not have bothered answering.
Unfortunately I also got scammed by an individual by entering the wrong username. The wrong username was specifically used to scam SBD's for an upvoting service. Not only did I send SBD to the wrong person, but I also got in the middle of a whale fight. I didn't know how to handle it. The person that scammed me ended up on his own upvoting me the amount that was erroneously sent. I did not ask him to as I did not want to get involved in their fight.
I also was scammed on the steemit chat and "donated" some SBD to someone who was not who they said they were.
I finally got my wife her own Steemit account and I suggested to her to follow you and I will encourage her to look at your 1st posts and your suggestions. She is a technophobe and so I am trying to teach her some of the ins and outs of just using a computer. It's a struggle, but she is making progress.

If you haven't already come across @papa-pepper you may want to check out a video series he did back in june or july on some tips for minnows.
This is the link for #13 of the series and if you look at the comments sections you will see a link to the 1st video. He tries to keep them under 10 minutes. I think he was not updating the past links in his blog. This may be a great source for some minnow questions you may have or those that you are helping.
https://steemit.com/help/@papa-pepper/advice-from-papa-video-13-tips-for-newer-users-on-steemit
He is quite the character and it may not look like it but he is quite humble.
Have a great rest of the day and I'm sure our paths will cross again.

Once again what a wonderful thing you are doing for me today by telling me about @papa-pepper and @rebeccaryan and what they did for you in the past. You @sighmanjestah will be one of my "@papa-pepper's and @rebeccaryan's" in my future stories about who inspired me when I was new. I can't believe you have taken the time today to not only give me some inspiring insight, but you now give me a heads-up on how to navigate the system (both pluses and minuses)...

I am very enthusiastic about the platform and the potential to truly change people's lives, but I am also aware that many people in life will try to take advantage of people's natural naivety and kindness. While I'm sorry to hear about what happened to you, I'm glad to see that you persevered and overcame it. I will keep your story now in the back of my mind and be careful to mention to others to do the same.

As to your wife, I would be happy to help her in any way I can. I speak relatively plainly so I'm used to helping people just starting. Plus I'm learning as I go so people also get the benefit of knowing I just learned it too. So if I can help her, encourage her to ask me anything and I will address her questions directly. Just tell her to tag me in any comment and I'll catch up to her when I go through my replies (which I do first before I do anything else). :)

Finally I will definitely go through the video from @papa-pepper and read the link you sent me. I am still learning new things every day and realize that many know more than me. I think the value of my role here is not in my artistic abilities (which I have none), but in my ability to have the patience to help everyone (particularly the new ones) and my desire to do my part to make steemit a place that can truly change people's lives. I have seen much in my life and experienced lots of wonderful things, so at a minimum I would like to see many of the poorer people in the world have a chance to have a decent life. I think this could be such a place to give them that opportunity.

Thank you again so much for your reaching out to me... If there is anything I can do for you please let me know. I'm so happy you found me and I hope you have a fantastic and wonderful day! :)

ps... if you could tell your wife to tell me who she is when she's ready, I will give her encouragement to contact me anytime.

My wife is @lildebbiecakes she posted just below your last post to me.

awesome, and again thank you for making the connection to me!

I watched it, its a very good perspective on things and I learned some new things to help me in the future. I think it is great how well all the people before me are doing and its nice to actually be a part of the community. Thanks so much again for the kind words and direction, it is very much appreciated!!!

Rick
You’ve got such light that shines shines shines! Way to follow our lord and savior. 👍

Hey @lildebbiecakes, I'm very happy to meet you! You're husband contacted me on this thread and I am very impressed by him and his good heart. So I'm sure you are equally a wonderful person and its my pleasure that he introduced me. :)

He mentioned that you are new here and I am too. In fact we are fellow 2017 Classmates :)

I have spent a lot of time since I've been here trying to learn everything I can, and I've been helping others who just ask me questions. I don't presume to know more than anyone, but if you do have a subject you don't understand or would like to know more about something then just ask me. If I know it I will be happy to share it. Its how we grow as a community and develop connections that can last forever.

I have also written about 10 articles about the things I've discovered that I found to be important to me doing better here. (like this one) If you would like to look through my blog you can see what interests you and what doesn't. Also if you don't have the time and just want to tell me what you want to know how to do most, then I can just give you a direct reply.

Bottom line is I like to help others and especially good people. So if you have anything you want to ask me, I'd be very excited to help you.

Now we are connected through you're husband and I welcome you to work with me as we make this community even better!

Have a nice day/night and a wonderful weekend... And I hope you stay in touch :)

Thank you @davemccoy for such a welcoming.I can see your sincerely a warm ,loving, and a very compassionate person. My kind of people! I have already started following you because my husband Rick said to me “Deb you need to follow this guy, you’d really like him and He talks about helping people that’s his thing”. So already we have something in common, the world needs more love ❤️ and boy it’s very rewarding and fun to spread it isn’t it? I’m an artist, I paint,draw,craft...... the list goes on. With Steemit I’ve got a huge chance to “spread the love” by entering art contests. When I enter a contest I primarily think about how I I can convey a message of love. So far I feel like I’ve done this I hope 🤞.

Wow! grate tips. Thank you for sharing @davemccoy. so glad to find you on Steemit. We just started a Facebook group where we help upvote each other on Steemit. If you like to join please follow this link:

Well thank you @jasnadao :) ... and same to you about finding each other! I will join the group on facebook (even though I don't spend much time on FB, I would be happy to meet more steemers) ... Thanks for the invite and for the comments too :)

I tried to connect but got this message,:

Maybe I have to be your friend their first??? lol ...

ps... I'm happy that you would even think to invite me to your group (even if I'm not allowed in) ;)

Wow....
There is so much to learn from this post, the simplicity of ur explanation is so splendid .have a learnt alot. Keep sharing your experience with us. Its surely helping somebody out there

Thank you so much for the reaction @medinho, I really appreciate the recognition and feedback. And more importantly, I'm happy you learned from it! I agree that if it is helping someone out there, then it is definitely worth doing and I also thank you for the words of encouragement! Happy new year and you should enter your reply in the contest, you never know what will happen ;)

Thank you dear. Last night your encouragement on my post "Goodbye Steemit" did well. now i read your tips and I think its really workable. before starting work again i am interested to read all your tips in other blogs then i will go to work again. Hopefully it will work for me this time.

WOW!!
Firstly I just want to say a big thanks to you Dave McCoy. For taking your time out to learn these, it shows you have the right motivation which is aimed at seeing this community grow.
I for one has learnt a lot by your sincere opinions and I hope every newbie gets to see this.
I support the idea of having nice posts that would attract great comments which forms the basis of lasting interactions on the network.
Thanks for teaching me what it really means to be a steemians.

Steemit is all about sharing valuable information with the word. I

Thank you very much @hokpulor, that is nice that you took the time to give me such compliments! It is definitely appreciated and I'm also happy that you recognize that I am sincere. I also agree with you very much that the basis of lasting interactions on the network is through good communication!

Also I would like to say that I certainly didn't teach you what it means to be a steemian, I can tell by your comments that you were a natural steemian on your own. I maybe helped you to see that you have it, but it has been inside you the whole time! You understand what steemit is about, and I am proud help you share that vision to the world! :)

Great approach you taking @davemccoy this is very helpful as I started at roughly the same time. The steemd info is really cool didn't know how to navigate it. Keep the good work as always, enjoy the coming 2018.

Thank you very much @cryptkeeper17, that is a nice thing to say... And I agree that is cool, and there is even more cool stuff I've learned that I'll be writing about soon too :) ...
