How do you explain Steemit to your friends/family?

Steemit is one of the most impressive blockchain apps I've seen, but I'm struggling to explain it to friends/family. What's your ELI5 ("Explain Like I'm 5") for Steemit? How do you respond when they ask "where does the money come from?"

I agree that Steemit is better experienced than explained, but an "elevator pitch" is still helpful to generate initial interest.
