Have you been waiting to be impressed by precision and beauty?
If you're a 3d wannabe like me who loves beautifully-designed and functional things, you'll love Daniel Noree's Open RC F1 Race Car. If you're a 3d enthusiast who has a lot of patience (not like me), you might love making it. The link above gives you all the STL files you need.
This little beauty weighs 400-500 mg. You'll need filament for the car and TPE for the tires.
The latest 2018 release has only a few changes from the previous model, but this project has been the subject of an active Google Group for years. Lots of people chimed in on innovative ways to perfectly print down to the details, like how to trick the slicer to print the little nubs on the outside of the low profile tires (source: Hackaday.com).
You can also find this model on Pinshape.com which is great for seeing how other people's prints turned out. https://pinshape.com/items/14797-3d-printed-openrc-formula-1-car
In the interview Daniel talks about the challenges of creating a fully 3d printable mini race car. One of the beautiful things about 3d printing (sorry, already used the word 'beautiful' 4 times, no more (there just aren't good substitutes, you know?)) is that it scales well -- so understandably people can print not-so-mini models to test for durability or just because they really need a large F1 race car model to decorate their home and add eye candy for youtube.
Not ready to commit yet? First read over this entire Build Guide to assess the effort. https://danielnoree.com/openrc-f1-build-guide/ Yes it's long. But detailed with loving care. If you lack patience or time to print everything yourself, rest assured that you can find parts for sale on Etsy, like this bearings kit.
