Barbecue grills are designed for quick outdoor cooking at high temperatures, although grill models with lids, such as Weber kettle grills, can be compensated for by smoking (group the charcoal to one side and cook with the lid closed). However, a dedicated smoker is much easier to use because there is more distance between the fire and the food and better heat control. If you were to look at the weber smokey mountain review, you would realize that wood smokers have different designs, including barrel-type, rack-type, and water-type. There are also several ceramic smokers on the market.
