My road to Steemfest4: Selling it all!

in #steemfest5 years ago (edited)

Not Steem though, I'm not selling those :)
I'm a bit of a copy-cat today. Yesterday I read @anouk.nox's post about her road to Steemfest4 and I thought, since we had these little contests last year, I might as well start writing about my road to Steemfest too. Getting it all written down helps me to focus, and maybe even somehow keep up with what I achieved and what is still needed to pay for these tickets.
I'm talking mainly flights, because the rest is really not that crazy expensive.
And once we're there, we'll survive. I managed to make money anywhere else, so I know I can do it again, especially in a place that I know well enough. Even though lots has changed in SE Asia since I moved back to Europe, no doubt about that ( I mean: there's a Universal Studio on Sentosa Island in Singapore, for realzzz???), I know that some will still be the same.

My initial plan

I know, I said somewhere that I'm not making plans anymore. However, writing stuff down isn't a bad thing, even if direction changes. We will be flying to Singapore, not directly to Bangkok. The cost to fly to Singapore is very reasonable compared to flying straight to Thailand. I know the flights from within SE Asia are so low at times, it's worth it to shop around for a trip. And it's even possible to go on the train or bus! Our first week will be in Singapore and we'll fly to Bangkok from there. I want to book the return flight from Singapore as well, three months later. I am going to be very open about that 3 month frame, because this is exactly how I landed, and stayed, in Asia the first time around: I had a 3 month ticket, and ended up staying almost 3 years!
Basically: we're going to Singapore and Thailand, and we'll see what happens after that.
Three of my best friends of my time in Asia still live in Singapore, and they're expecting me. One is in Shanghai at the moment, so that is one of the places on my list for sure, and another is in Phuket, Thailand, so yeah...definitely a visit there.
My girl in Singapore is already planning to travel with us for a bit. Can't wait!!!

Stuff, stuff, and more stuff

Today I was looking around in our garage/shed (no car's ever been in it, just 'stuff').
Aside from the obvious useless crap, like empty boxes and full boxes with more crap (not even mine), I found some dinner chairs, one of those bicycle trailers to move children in (not in the best state, but dry and working), and a gem of a 'crap stuff thingie': my chainsaw! Yes, I have a chainsaw. I bought it last year because I was convinced I needed it. Turns out, chainsaws are really only good for branches, the hard-wood I had was a pain to saw through. That job was better done with a sledgehammer and wedge. Aside from this, I also don't really love handling a chainsaw. It makes a lot of noise, and it's dangerous! YUP, I'm a wussy!
Anyway, I should be able to sell this for at least 80 Euro, as it's pretty much brand-new and has only been used 3-4 times.

The doghouse is ready and already listed on a local selling site. There's a buggy for sale on it too, which should bring me anywhere between 100 and 150 Euro. These three things alone will possibly pay for one ticket!
Tomorrow I'm going to spend all day listing little bits and pieces I have and my new found gems.
We have a shop here in the area, one about 10 minutes from us and the other 20, that is selling Funko Pops.
These are collectibles and some of them go for outrageous amounts of money. Now, this shop is kinda like a Dollar store in the US. They usually buy stock other shops can't sell anymore, or large quantities of things. At the moment, they are selling those Funko Pops for around EUR 5,- on average, so I bought a few that I knew would sell for at least EUR 10,- or more.
Now, I only did buy a few, because I don't want to be stuck with them if they don't sell quick enough, but it's worth a go.
Because this shop can have different stock in other locations, I checked the other one as well, and YUP, they had different Funko Pops. However, none that were interesting, so I started looking around for other things. Turns out: I found quite a bit that they have lots of and sells for twice the price on eBay. I even applied for a part-time job at that shop! They had a sign up, and I thought I'd catch two birds with one stone. A job will get me closer to realizing my goal faster, and working there will also give me discounts for their products. More profit to make!

I used to sell quite a bit on eBay in the past, so I guess I will eBay sell my way to Steemfest4 this year.
Well...I do have another idea as well, but more about that in another post.
The start has been made, the rest will follow.

Thank you for reading!

Sounds like a great plan and a great gradual way of getting there!

I've opted for a 5 week window myself, I've got too cushty a number with work in the UK to head out for any longer, and 5 weeks is about as long as I can push it.

I'm now gonna look up funko pops.

Well 5 weeks is a nice time to see quite a bit too! Not everyone has the opportunity to do so. I'm sure there will be enough people who will only be there for the duration of the fest and then have to be back home for their duties there. I may not be rich, but I feel very blessed to be able to do (most of my) work from home so I have the freedom to stay longer. The only worry for me is our animals, 2 dogs and 3 cats, but I have a great boarding kennel for the dogs where they don't charge an arm and a leg and the cats could go to a cattery. I'm also looking into maybe getting a house sitter instead, which would solve that issue.
And I'm even looking into the possibility to send them over just in case we decide to stay (longer). But really not a worry just yet. They have all their shots and passports, so if anything I can arrange air shipping for them and arrange for someone to bring them there.
Either way, I'm keeping all my options open.

Sounds like you've got it well sorted. A house sitter sounds like an ideal option to me!

I am going to start doing this type of post too. I'm so glad to see yours to give me the idea. I am in KL now and have so many thoughts swirling in my head. I do not have anything here to sell, but I have a lot of "issues" I need to figure out. Hope to see you there!

It would be AWESOME to meet you there! Luckily flying (or even bus or train) from KL is not too bad and reasonably priced. For me, I have to get 6 plane tickets from here, so that adds up. I'm planning to spend some time in Malaysia too after SF. I actually want to go everywhere hehehe.
Maybe I can just stay till the SF5 is on the books :D I hope you figure out all of your 'issues' soon. Much love!!!

Hi misslasvegas

I'd sounds like you're a gal with a plan! I love the itinerary and also the little tip you've dropped about cheaper flights to Singapore. I've always wanted to dive in both Malaysia and Indonesia so I might try to get there 3 months b4 SF4 and make my way up to Bangkok as a final finales for the trip 😉🙂

I'm still not 100% I'll make it tbh but I really want to.

Good luck with your plans 👍

NO IS NOT AN OPTION!!! YOU WILL MAKE IT!!! 😁😇
And diving in those places is a great motivator!!
I even checked the possibility to go all the way from London to Thailand on the train. It is possible, but altogether a bit more expensive. However, it would be a great thing to do if there was time and if the cost of the trip is too high to pay all at once.
Definitely something new on my bucket list now!!!

I'm looking forward to seeing you again, and this time have a longer conversation than only one cigarette.

P.s. if you want to see me talking about steemfest?....

Check out my last DTube from 5 days ago called 'Steem FanBoy - Steem Life!'

It's kinda a comedy character sketch... But I 'big up' SF4 in it big time 😆😉

I watched it! Man, you're funny! That was great :)

I shall make it happen 🤣🤣🤣😉 don't worry.

I just wanted to ask something. I just got a direct message from you on twitter which was some type of link to buying marketing for twitter accounts. Did you send that? I'm only asking as it seemed like it might be some type of strange phishing thing like if your Twitter had been hacked? I've noticed 4 other people on twitter who are steemians have sent similar links via DM on twitter.

and this time have a longer conversation than only one cigarette.

For sure would be better to hang out for longer this time! Part of why I wasn't around that much at sf3 was cause I was sick a lot of the time. I wasn't at full capacity in Krakow ☹️ but I'd I make Bangkok I plan on being 100% fit and healthy 🙂

Yeah, it was a link that someone else sent me (not them directly, but the site) and I was stupid enough to check it out (it came from a Steemian). I think it sends these links to anyone I follow/follows me. Annoying. Sorry for the hassle. It should have stopped from my end now though.

Oh, I never knew you were sick last year! Yes, be sure to take care of yourself and be healthy. And I won't get hit by a car this time LOL.

Ahhh cheers 4 letting me know. I clicked on the link as well so I'm hoping it won't start sending them links or to all the people i follow. I'm gonna go on my twitter now and check what's it is and how to stop it.

Sorry for the hassle. It should have stopped from my end now though.

No worries, you're not the first person I got these DM from 🙂

Well, most people just asked what it was,but one guy actually just sent a very rude 'fuck off' so I send him a reply explaining that I made an honest mistake (and unfollowed LOL, not really though). I was dumb enough to not even check what it was all about before I clicked. Will never happen again though :D
