Today I want tell you about July 25 in my country Tunisia. This day is very important for us but also have complicated feelings.

The Story Behind This Date

July 25, 1957 - this is when Tunisia become republic . Before this day, we had monarchy with king ruling everything. But government decide to change and make Tunisia republic with president instead.

When I was child, old people in my area always tell stories about that day. They was young then and say people were very excited because everyone think this will bring better life and freedom. People was dancing in streets and making zaghrouta (that's traditional celebration sound we make in Tunisia).

How We Celebrate Now

Every year on July 25, we have national holiday. Schools close, government close, and there are parades in cities. You see Tunisian flags everywhere and families meet together for special meals. We eat couscous and other traditional food. Many people feel proud during celebrations.

But honestly, sometimes I think about our problems too. Life is still hard for many families here. Young people study but struggle to find work. My cousin finish university but still looking for job for 2 years now. Many want to go Europe because they think better opportunities there. This make me sad because our country need these people.

The Dark Side of This Date

This date became complicated in recent years too. In 2021, big changes happened on July 25 - parliament was suspended and government changed, some people supported this, others didn't agree at all, it caused many discussions between families and friends, even in my neighborhood, people was arguing about it.

Also in 2013, politician Mohamed Brahmi was killed on same date. This shocked everyone and made July 25 feel sad for many Tunisians. We say "Allah yarhamou" (may God rest his soul) when we remember him.

What I Hope

I still have hope for Tunisia though, we have educated people and good location between Africa and Europe. Our beaches are beautiful and food is amazing, But I wish we use our potential better. I wish there were more jobs and less corruption, sometimes I get frustrated when I see talented people leaving country.

Maybe this sounds like impossible dream, but without dreams how can country improve? My father always tell me to keep hope alive.

My Final Thoughts

When July 25 comes this year, I will join celebrations and feel proud to be Tunisian, but I also think about what we can do better for future, change starts with normal people like us, not just politicians.

July 25 reminds us where we came from and where we want to go next. I love Tunisia with all its problems and all its beauty. This is my home and always will be.

What about you? Do you have similar feelings about your country national days? I would like hear your thoughts and experiences too.
