Referee mistakes

Lately there have been a lot of disputes about some quite dubious referee calls in all the games that I have been able to watch. Penalties given, penalties not given, offsides that are not offsides, red cards that are not deserved and some that are deserved are not given. But one major culprit is social media, photos that don't show the whole picture, AI and a complete ignorance of the rules of the game by most people.

Case in point the PSG second goal in their game against Barcelona. I have heard arguments from both sides and most of them backed by pictures like the one I accompany this post with. Now if you look superficially at this picture you would probably think it is an offside. But if you look at it real good you will see that the angle this picture was taken from is to the right of the action, so the picture basically has no value.

I watched the game on TV, the goal was shown from all angles possible and the one that was directly in line with the two players involved clearly shows that the ball is ahead of the receiving player, thus not an offside. Yes, that is the rule, what is measured is if the player is in front or behind the ball when the pass is made. So I see no problem, it is a legitimate goal.

But what I wonder is why FIFA or UEFA don't implement an app that will instantly measure the distance between players and ball and the closest line, like the area line or even the corner line. This would surely eliminate any speculation, and I have no doubts this would not be difficult to do.
