Winter tires will become mandatory
In a series of amendments to the Highway Safety Code, the Quebec Ministry of Transport officially preceded the effective date of mandatory winter tires.
Starting in 2019, Quebec drivers will have to install their winter tires by December 1st at the latest. Since 2008, winter tires were mandatory from December 15th only. At the end of the cold season, the legal withdrawal date for winter tires will remain on March 15th.
In addition to this new regulation concerning winter tires, the Highway Safety Code has been modified and now includes several new features. Here are a few:
More restrictions for learner drivers
Young motorists are once again targeted by new rules of the Highway Safety Code. Beginning May 18, apprentice drivers of a passenger vehicle will no longer be able to drive between midnight and 5 am.
Also starting May 18, a driver 19 years of age or younger with a probationary license will be limited in the number of passengers 19 years old or younger that can be transported in his vehicle between midnight and 5am. This restriction will apply during the driver's first year of driving.
For motorcyclists, apprentice drivers will no longer be required to be accompanied by another motorcyclist. However, they will not be able to drive their motorbikes between midnight and 5am starting May 18th.
