There is a fundamental secret that we must always keep in mind to serve God and it consists of having a willing heart, and after all the rest God takes care of it.

He saved us, not because of works of righteousness that we have done, but because of his mercy, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit, 6 whom he poured out on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7 so that being justified by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.
8 This is a trustworthy saying, and I want you to be firm in these things, so that those who believe in God should be careful to engage in good works. These things are good and useful to men.

Titus 3:5-8

There are several realities regarding the opportunity to serve God, when it is presented to us, what do we do? In some cases we accept even if we are not completely sure, in other cases perhaps because we have many other occupations or we do not feel qualified we give up on the opportunity. Perhaps we only think that idolatry is worshiping an image or something similar and we do not believe that it is also refusing to serve God since idolatry also consists of always choosing our own desires instead of choosing for God or submitting them to him.
God's desire for us his children is clear, he fervently desires that we seek his guidance and that we let ourselves be carried out by the plan that he has for us so that he can execute it through us. God provides ways for us to serve God and to put our gifts and talents at his service and that of others. But if our decision is categorically that we cannot or do not want to serve him, whatever the reason, it means that our will is much more important than the will of God.
Not serving God in many ways such as sharing the gospel with our college classmates or coworkers, loving our wife, our children, and much more. Obviously there are no restrictions on the work of God that can be carried out through our lives, the Holy Spirit of God overcomes any human limitation and if we believe that we are not brave or skillful enough to carry out the will of God, He can work even when we believe otherwise.
Our job is to apply that secret which consists of submitting to the will of God, let us put aside that this is what we are holding on to tightly and trust that God will help us in everything He calls us to do.

13 I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

Philippians 4:13

We can trust and have full certainty that God will enable us, give us the tools and strength to carry out the task He designates for us, our job is only to prepare our heart and surrender to His will.
