What in the world is Steemit?

I found Steemit a few days ago, I started to write a post and then found out I had to wait a bit.
let's see if it was worth the wait, and here is what I wrote while I was confused.

Confused:
I'm here, trying to figure out how to make an account-
...and it says I can post without logging in?
Oh wait no I can't...
What is the point of all of this?
I see lots of $$$ and to be honest-- really raw content, not sure if good.
So can anyone tell me what is going on?
What is steem? Steemit? SteemWorld? Steem.Supply?
