I'm a new javascript programmer and I'm excited about building things on top of the steem blockchain. I have a lot to learn, but I'm making steady progress.
I really don't see any reason, for a developer, not to dip your toes in the water.
I'm not a developer myself, so I can't say for sure. But I'm quite certain that creating a small side project and developing an app on the Steem blockchain could be quite rewarding. In many ways.

There are many ways to look at this. Content can be many things.
For example also a music playing app comparable to SoundCloud.
Not sure how active this project is though.
