Build Steem Applications

I have a question for Steem developers.

If we are to build applications upon Steem we need revenue models to be sustainable. The last thing we want is replica Twitter apps that end up in the same scenario as the existing Twitter, with lots of people extracting value from the platform but nobody paying for it.

Lets say my web app is a version of 5er and I don't want to charge fees to my users because I don't want to manage payment processing. Can a portion of the upvote reward go to the application wallet? What if a similar application to mine extracted less of the reward for its upvotes. It would have to find a balance between extracting value to pay developers to improve features and bleeding the network.

So applications on top of the Steem blockchain that do similar things could compete both on the features they offer and the value they extract.

Is that feasible? Can anyone point me to conversations on this subject?
