Weird Curation Behavior: When I up-vote, the reward payout actually goes down!! What's going on here?

When I up-vote, the reward payout actually goes down!! WHY??

Hey... Does anybody know why the reward payout sometimes goes down when I up-vote a posting? It seems to have no rhyme or reason why it goes up or down.

1. If I up-vote a posting that already has like $250 the reward payout increases for that post.
2. If I up-vote a posting that has a small reward like $9 the reward payout decreases for that post.

At first I thought my voting power dropping below 33% was causing the negative behavior. I've been trying to keep my voting power above 40%... but, it's still happening. Any ideas on what could cause this? Should I wait until I get my voting power back up to 70% or 80%??

You can see here my voting power is almost back up to 50%.

Any info on this subject would be helpful... thx.

I really want to understand this stuff.

I noticed this happened to one of my posts too, I want to know what causes it because obviously it has the opposite of my desired effect. Commenting to follow.

If you see that happening frequently, it's just a coincidence. It isn't you. There are various factors that alter the payout of a post:

  1. The ever changing value of Steem. If the value of Steem decreases, but SBD doesn't, then 1 SBD is suddenly worth more Steem than it was a moment ago, so the amount of SBD listed for payout will be less.
  2. There is a fixed amount of daily payout on steem. Let's say, for the sake of illustration it's $10,000. If I'm the only person to vote today and I vote on your article, then your payout would be $10,000. But if someone else with equal voting power comes along and votes on another article, your payout is cut in half to $5,000. If you see the payment on a post decrease, it could be because a lot of people (or a lot of voting power) is going toward other posts and increasing their payout.

Don't worry. Your upvote will always increase the percentage of the daily payout that that post will achieve, even if the actual numbers go down.

Ahhh I see.... so, it's just a coincidence then. I might have the page open for 2 or 3 minutes. During that time whales might be voting on other posts diluting and driving the overall site-wide payouts down.

When I joined Steemit, this was the first thing I noticed. It is explained by the volatile price of Steem (going down currently) and a set voting pool with a set daily voting power pool, which honestly I don't understand that well. Don't worry about it, keep voting.

The actual reward is fluctuating all the time depending on lots of factors, most likely that all are just coincidences
