Public Witness Statement @therealwolf
5 days ago, I've shared with you an open letter I wrote to Ned & Steemit Inc., about my concerns with the current 35 Million SP power-down of @steemit and the risk this possesses for Steem.
Yesterday, @ned came onto the PALnet discord server to speak on the State of Steem show about multiple topics. One of them was about this power-down and the reasoning of it. Essentially, it is a protective measure to save the funds of Steemit Inc. in a possible fork which would threaten their stake.
This threat originated from these written lines of code by a @almost-digital. In addition, there has been some uproar & dissatisfaction from stakeholders & witnesses towards the results Steemit Inc. has achieved in return for selling their initially mined Stake. While nobody planned to run this code or door were in favour of it (as far as I know)ll interpreted by @ned as a real threat.
Now, I understand why @ned has then decided to start this power down, but I believe that powering down 35+ million STEEM is still a risk for the ecosystem.
Public On-Chain Statement
That's why I want to make this public, on-chain statement (on an immutable ledger) as a show of good faith, because I believe in a future for Steem, where Steemit Inc. and it's stakeholders & community are working together:
I, @therealwolf, will not in any way, run a version of steemd on my servers as a Witness, that are risking the funds of Steemit Inc, without creating a new chain. Which means: should there be a fork that creates a new blockchain (similar like SCORUM, SMOKE, WHALESHARES, etc), then that's another case, however, I will not support any fork that is trying to alter/remove the balance/keys/stake of Steemit Inc. on the main-chain STEEM!
This statement is valid regardless if the power-down is cancelled because I believe a fork in that way, will threaten the health of our STEEM ecosystem, where many projects, communities, apps & users have found a place they can call home.
Additionally, I also see any hard-fork threatening to split the STEEM community on a new blockchain as potential destructive, so I'm very careful in that regard and will not accept any half-baked attempts.
Now with that said, I do hope that you, @ned, will take the leap of faith and stop the power-down.
Thank you!
@therealwolf
Steem Witness
I prefer your post to @timcliff's and I would like to make a very similar public on-chain statement right here:
I, @yabapmatt, will not in any way, run a version of steemd on my servers as a Witness, that are risking the funds of any account.
Similar to what @therealwolf has said, this statement is valid regardless of whatever Steemit, Inc, or anyone else on the platform, chooses to do with their stake.
Thank you for this statement, Matt!
I (voter) am happy to hear that public on chain statement of commitment to the welfare of the greater number of steem users and the entire steem blockchain community.
I will continue to support Steem witnesses that will uphold, will do the same pronouncements.

Thanks for this! Hadn't seen the code that was threatening the accounts, just the power down and a vague reference to it. While I'm not even close to the top 21 witnesses, I agree entirely, and will similarly make @yabapamatt's pledge.
I, @petertag, will not in any way, run a version of steemd on my servers as a Witness, that are risking the funds of any account.
Edit: although, on second thought, we really shouldn't have to pledge like this. This is the kind of thing that ruins a block chain, even considering taking any account's crypto and burning it. While proposals are certainly accepted in general because it's an open community, I'm surprised @ned even considered the thought that witnesses would approve it. I didn't make a statement (except for some comments on the power down) because I had barely any idea this 'proposal' happened, and none as to what the proposed HF would actually do.
This is true. It is also incomplete. If a witness hypothetically said they were neutral about running this code or not, that is a threat ... hypothetically.
Hypothetically, yes. But I understand what you mean with it and I agree - it's not a direct rejection being neutral about it. That's why I can understand that it created a threat situation.
Good point. In which case, it's nice to see these statements coming out from witnesses, to put the public at ease, and hopefully Steemit Inc, as well.
Yep, people aren't saying this enough.
Thank you, @therealwolf. I've made a similar statement as well: Is Steem Centrally Controlled?.

No witness could ever run a code like that. It threatens the integrity of STEEM as a unit of value.
People can be angry all they want, but this would be the equivalent of suicide for the chain.
If you can do it to one groups holdings, it can be done to anyone. It's unreasonable from a multitude of standpoints.
They could, but I agree with threatening the integrity. I personally wouldn't feel safe owning STEEM, knowing that if enough people agree that I don't deserve them, it would be gone.
Yes and that's dangerous. I mean, there were a few cases where this happened, but AFAIK it only happened due to accounts being compromised. Was long before my time on Steem though.
Nobody would. It's one thing to joke around about this sort of thing. It's a whole different thing to code and propose it seriously.
The block chain should not be edited, awarded coins should not be removed by force. It's just contrary to everything that I feel the crypto community stands for.
With HF9, there was a case where the code (from the HF21 PR) was originally used, but only for recovering funds of hacked accounts AFAIK.
I remember
You speak many out of the soul! Thank you for sharing your thoughts.
Does every top 20 witness need to publicly announce that they are not going to vote for any mean that could potentially remove any stake from Steemit?
I guess steemit forced them.. And in return will vote for them in the future.
I understand your diplomatic style :)
Anyway.. I believe great part of community looks for the "lolfork" like a lolfork, saying this, my guess is that the reason is other, and don't have to be a bad reason..
Remember "Destiny", new developers, new company, new everything, I not surprised if reason was that.
(I wonder if all top witness follow your statement 😉)

i covered this topic today in a video and i think this statement is very important! thank you (im voting for your witness)
You speak the truth. I was also afraid when i first heard about the huge power down. I was afraid of the side effect it may have to the community
Haven't seen any of your comments in a while. Was beginning to wonder if i'd pushed you off the cliff edge already. :-D
