Remembering the USFL Pittsburgh Maulers Team
Do any football fans out there remember the USFL? This is an old pin from the Pittsburgh Maulers. I've got a lot of vintage things around here, so I thought I'd share some of them on Steemit.
A Short History of the Pittsburgh Maulers USFL Experience
They only played in 1984, and they weren't very good. Their overall record that year was 3 wins and 15 losses. They had the number one overall pick during that inaugural season. People around Pittsburgh (a major football town) thought they would choose Steve Young, but they didn't. Instead, they chose Mike Rozier. He had won the Heisman that year, but Steelers fans weren't thrilled with him as the first overall pick.
The USFL originally ran on a spring schedule. After the first season, they decided to make it a fall schedule. There was no way for the Maulers to compete with the already very well established Pittsburgh Steelers NFL team, so owner Edward DeBartolo (the mall building guy) quietly shut down the team and ended a very unusual chapter in Pittsburgh professional sports history.
