NUESTRO TURPIAL VENEZOLANO
El Turpial es una hermosa ave cantora de plumaje negro en su cabeza pecho y alas, y el resto de un incandescente amarillo casi anaranjado,con una fina línea blanca en sus alas. Mide de 15 a 22 centímetros, es de pico coniforme y puntiagudo.
Es el ave Nacional de Venezuela desde el 23 de Mayo de 1958, y uno de los símbolos nacionales junto al Araguaney y la Orquídea.
Nos deleita esta pintoresca ave en casi toda la geografía venezolana, pero también a Colombia, Panamá y al resto de la zona norte suramericana. Recorre sabanas y selvas de galería que son zonas cálidas y de poca precipitación, donde consigue las provisiones necesarias que constituyen su dieta, tales como insectos, frutas, huevos de otras aves y ocasionalmente una que otra ave más pequeña.
El Turpial acostumbra ocupar nidos abandonados, y puede vivir solo o en pareja. La época de apareamiento del turpial va de marzo a septiembre. La hembra deposita en el nido de 3 a 4 huevos, incubándolos durante dos semanas, luego de las cuales nacen las crías. Durante este período el turpial defiende férreamente su territorio, brindando constante protección y alimento a sus crías.
En Venezuela es común ver en los patios de las casas trozos de frutas; naranja, lechosa, cambur, para atraer a la hermosa ave y disfrutar de su magnífica belleza y espectacular sonoridad de su canto.
