Colocar un centenar de piedras, en línea recta y con intervalos de dos metros entre cada dos sucesivas y entre la primera y el montón de que se saquen (total 200 metros), parece ser cosa de poco tiempo y de poca monta. Mas impóngase la condición de trasladar las piedras una por una y la operación resultará pesada.

La colocación de la primera piedra supondrá un trayecto de 2 metros a la ida y 2 metros a la vuelta: total, 4 metros.
La de la segunda un trayecto de 2 x 4 = 8 metros.
La de la tercera un trayecto de 2 x 6 = 12 metros.
La de la centésima un trayecto de 2 x 200 = 400 metros.
Y en total el trayecto recorrido será:
2 (2 + 4 + 6 + 8… + 200)

o sea
2 x 100 x 101 = 2 x 10100 = 20200 metros.

Es decir, la ordenación de las 100 piedras supone recorrer más de veinte kilómetros.
