ILUSTRACIÓN ICONOGRÁFICA DE MACHERA Y LA RELIGIOSIDAD POPULAR / MACHERA ICON AND POPULAR RELIGIOUSNESS

Buen día Steemers. Hoy quiero compartirles un pequeño homenaje que realicé hace algún tiempo, y que a parte de ser uno de mis trabajos favoritos tambien tiene un valor sentimental para mi.
Reconociendo el valor y la importancia simbólica de la religiosidad popular, así como la pedicularidad de un fenómeno digno de ser estudiado, quise hacer una ilustración estilo iconografica sobre un personaje popular oriundo de mi ciudad de origen (Mérida, edo. Mérida, Venezuela) conocido por el pseudonimo de "Machera" y que hace parte de la idiosincrasia de esta ciudad pues Machera es un santo, un santo de la religiosidad popular merideña.
Su nombre era Luis Enrique Cerrada Molina y le llamaban el "Robin Ju" de Mérida, porque se sabe que tenía por costumbre repartir entre los habitantes de su barrio los grandes botines de los que se apoderaba durante sus hazañas. Murió en el año `77, abatido por la policía, a sus cortos 21 años.
A partir de ahí nace la figura de un ser milagroso, el santo malandro.
No en vano su tumba está repleta de ofrendas hacia él en agradecimiento de los favores concedidos.

Good day Steemers. Today I want to share with you a little tribute I made some time ago, and besides being one of my favorite works, it also has a sentimental value for me.
Recognizing the value and symbolic importance of popular religiosity, as well as the pedicularity of a phenomenon worthy of being studied, I wanted to make an iconographic style illustration about a popular character from my city of origin (Mérida, Mérida, Venezuela). by the pseudonym of "Machera" and that is part of the idiosyncrasy of this city because Machera is a saint, a saint of popular religiosity in Merida.
His name was Luis Enrique Cerrada Molina and they called him the "Robin Ju" of Mérida, because it is known that he was in the habit of distributing among the inhabitants of his neighborhood the great booty he seized during his exploits. He died in the year `77, killed by the police, his short 21 years.
From there the figure of a miraculous being is born, the holy malandro.
Not in vain his tomb is full of offerings to him in gratitude for the favors granted.

Más que un homenaje a Machera, lo considero recordatorio de ese fenómeno tan repetido y suscitado en muchas partes de latinoamerica de no solo creer y tener fé ciega hacia algún personaje popular que en vida haya tenido algunas habilidades especiales sino también a estos llamados "malandros" que de una u otra forma lograron ganarse la simpatía de sus vecinos y conocidos, hasta de una región entera. Lo considero un fenómeno digno de ser estudiado a modo de aproximarse al origen de muchas otras creencias y costumbres "populares".

More than a tribute to Machera, I consider it a reminder of that phenomenon so repeated and raised in many parts of Latin America to not only believe and have blind faith towards some popular character who in life has had some special abilities but also these so-called "malandros" that in one way or another managed to win the sympathy of their neighbors and acquaintances, even of a whole region. I consider it a phenomenon worthy of being studied in order to approach the origin of many other "popular" beliefs and customs.
