As said in the original source, this beautiful galaxy resembles a "wizard's staff set aglow".
The spiral galaxy NGC 1032 is located some hundred million light years away and is a part of the Cetus (The Sea Monster) constellation. NGC 1032 is actually a spiral galaxy but it is set almost edge-on to our perspective - this is great for size measurements and data collection on spiral galaxies.

Many other galaxies are scattered in the background, putting things in perspective and adding a depth effect which only makes this image so much more beautiful. The shiniest sparkle at the bottom of the image is a star much closer to us, probably part of the Milky Way.
