Crew Dragon Demo-1 A Resounding Success!!
Today Space X and commercial space flight hit another enormous milestone as the Crew Dragon (Dragon 2) capsule touched softly down into the Atlantic ocean this morning at around 7:45 a.m. CT.
The mission essentially went off without a hitch, with the capsule launching successfully, docking with the International Space Station without issue, re-entering the atmosphere without burning up, and deploying its parachutes in a timely manner.
It's important to note that this mission was unmanned and was purely a demonstration mission (hence Demo-1) to show that the capsule functions as intended. Before humans will actually fly on the capsule, there's still an important flight abort test necessary to ensure that the system's emergency measures are working properly. That'll probably happen before June.
Then the most exciting part, astronauts flying in the capsule to the Space Station on Crew Dragon Demo-2 mission, probably before year's end if the abort test goes off as well as Demo-1! It's an exciting time to be alive, folks!
