Korean night life = Soju

in #soju7 years ago

South Korea is the number one hard liquor consumer in the world(Isn't that surprising? You will get it why when you experience Korean night life). Although other kinds of hard liquor such as Vodka, Tequila, and Whiskey consumption have been gaining popularity recent years, Soju has remained the mainstream of nightlife beverage in South Korea due to its low price and availability(All hail the SOJU). As long as you are over 19 in legal age you can get Soju every corner of streets 247. EVEN AT THE CONVENIENCE STORE!! But, more you know about Soju, you will get to understand Koreans and their life.

Soju tastes neutral like vodka, but little bit of sweetness and less burn. Foreigners are often seen and tend to drink Soju by itself or a chaser(People trust me not like that!). However, I believe they are missing out huge chunk of Korean culture and beauty of drinking Soju. Koreans have categorized food that can be drank with alcohole: “Anju(안주).” Anju are typically oily, spicy, and salty, such as SamGyeobSal(porkbelly), DakBal(chickenfeet), and salty snacks. The combination of Soju and Anju(hmm that rhyms) with good people is like the holy trinity of drinking. But some people find soju disgusting due to residing rubbing alcohole taste afterward. What is funny is that when somebody is in the mood of drinking whether sad or happy, Soju tastes SWEETER. If you are new to Soju you wouldn’t believe it but, its true.

As, Soju can taste awful to some people, so, the Soju companies have came up with flavored Soju(Trust me it taste like a juice). They are much lighter and sweeter. Definitely there are way to drink making cocktail out of it (I will blog them latter). Flavors are: Citron, Blueberry, Grapefruit, Peach, and Pomegranate. Personally I don’t favor flavored Soju since it doesn’t taste like a liquor. But if i were to give recommendations Citron and Pomegranate will be good.

If you want to be loved by Koreans being in Korea, you would want to say "I LOVE SOJU" beside all that "I LOVE KIMCHI AND PSY" If you get to like drinking Soju and understand the culture of drinking Soju, you will get to like being in Korea and around its' people. I will come back with better postings and reviews. Thanks for reading.

If you have anything curious about Korea. Let me know I will try my best to post it.
