Social media: Humanity is sick

in #socialmedia4 years ago

It has often been a problem on social media that many people can speak the most horrible insults to one another and get away with it. This, unfortunately, is the case for many of the sites due to the site administrators doing nothing to police this kind of behavior, leaving the victims to fend for themselves. This is what boils my blood about social media.

So, I decided to step in and put up a poll to see what mattered most: Freedom of Speech or Preventing Suicide from Trolling/Cyberbullying. These were the results:

The majority of voters did not hesitate to choose freedom of speech. However, what they did not realize is that this was a sting operation to see how much of the population would turn it's back on its fellow man to follow it's own selfish needs. The most nauseating part is how many favored their own lives instead of the lives of others around them. Some of the worst said the following:

It made me sick to my stomach just listening to these people. Do they care nothing for the lives around them!? I bet they wouldn't even shed a tear if their own family suddenly died. It's the same thing here. These people do not give a damn who they hurt or what they say. What's worse is they hide behind the first amendment to justify their own words, using it as a crutch to continue terrorizing people. Since when did our founding fathers make it a right to tell people "kill yourself?" They didn't, and this is what the population needs to realize.

It's something like this that has me fully backing initiatives like Polite Type by TietoEVRY:

This is just the kind of thing the internet needs to tackle these tyrants. Of course, once they caught wind of it, they started coming out of the woodworks to chastise it:

They are throwing everything they have at it because they know that once it goes up, they will lose all power over vulnerable people and have to resort to creating their own website to speak how they want, creating an echo chamber for themselves. Every single one of them have turned rabid and are attacking this project like there's no tomorrow. If only they could see how doing so furthers the cause of it. The more they attack it, the stronger it becomes. It's high time trolling was dealt with. I'm all for Polite Type.

I hope to see major platforms adopting this font to silence the madness once and for all.
